Athletes assist alumnus with local ingathering
Each fall, churches in Scotland County host a series of ingatherings and events designed to raise funds and bring the community together. These events require a lot of work according to Chairman of the Ingathering Committee at Faith Presbyterian Church Ben Ormand '62.
"For our annual ingathering, we prepare 2,500 plates of barbecue and chicken salad," said Ormand. "It is a major undertaking. We serve lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. It takes approximately 50 people to pull off. It's all prepared right here and with a small membership and an aging population it is a lot."
Knowing what was involved, a week prior to the event in mid-October, the chairman called on a friend at St. Andrews.
"I called (Men's Soccer Coach) Stevan Hernandez to ask him for some help," Ormand said. "He's helped in the past but this year he brought seven assistants with him. They worked from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and they really worked their rumps off. They were perfect gentlemen and did all that was asked of them with a smile."
The assistants included players Hector Escobar, Alex Smith, Andrew Roberto, Andrew Pelfrey and Kyle Dela Merced. Also contributing to the cause were Assistant Women's Basketball Coach Randy Hernandez and Assistant Soccer Coach Tamas Szalai.
"They were all assigned responsibilities," Ormand said. " I was able to do my work without having to run all over because of their work."
