"As a first generation Latin American, it was different coming here, but I soon realized that I could just be me. St. Andrews is a school for people who like small classes and a close community."

Laurinburg, NC - The St. Andrews University Equestrian Center will be hosting one of three Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Western Semi Finals this weekend.

This free event is open to the public. The competition will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday with the Reining competitions leading off each day with an estimated start for the Horsemanship divisions of 10 a.m.

“We are one of three Semi Finals taking place this weekend,” said Carla Wennberg, western coach at St. Andrews. “The other two host schools are West Texas A & M and the University of Findlay.”

The top 3 teams and top 4 individuals from each Semi Final advance to the National Championships in Harrisburg, Pa., May 1 - 4.

“Semi Final qualifiers are seeded nationally with the goal of bringing together schools that do not usually compete against one another,” said Wennberg. “Teams and individuals traveling to St. Andrews include Cazenovia College of NY, Central Florida University, Florida State University, Georgia Southern, and Cal Poly Pomona.”

Judges for the competition will be Deborah Jones Wright and Stephanie Lynn. The majority of awards will be presented following each of the classes on Sunday. Additional information about the schedule can be found at http://ihsainc.com/events/western-semis.
