Laurinburg, N.C. - On a recent Saturday morning, about a dozen local children came to the John Blue Lab at St. Andrews University for a scientific activity.

St. Andrews Director of Logistics Rooney Coffman and Dr. John Knesel, associate professor of biology, worked with the members of a club known as “The Garden” to create bottle rockets.

“Our goal is to spend time with the kids either tutoring, playing or experiencing new things,” said Janie Sutton, one of the club’s leaders.

The group had previously done an activity with Art Professor Stephanie McDavid and that success inspired the work with the science group.

“We really enjoyed this opportunity for outreach,” said Knesel. “And I think the kids had a good time.”
