Ellen Thompson settling in as Alumni Director

Alumni Director Ellen Thompson

Laurinburg, N.C. - As the morning sun streams in the windows overlooking Lake Ansley Moore, St. Andrews Alumni Director Ellen Thompson is busy responding to alumni emails and messages on the official Alumni Facebook Page.

“I really enjoy connecting with fellow alumni,” the 1977 St. Andrews graduate said. “I am really looking forward to meeting and engaging with more alumni from different classes and different decades.”

A native of Atlanta, the philosophy major worked in banking, catering, event planning and household organizing in the Georgia city before accepting the alumni position at her alma mater.

“The St. Andrews experience, that amazing liberal arts education I was so fortunate to receive, gave me the confidence to learn new skills, taught me flexibility in work and in life, and made me open to new possibilities,” Thompson said. “For the past couple of years, I’ve explored the prospect of working in an academic environment in a smaller town. Close ties to St. Andrews over the years made me excited to return to work with the administration and alumni.”

Thompson moved to Laurinburg in February and had to hit the ground running in planning the 2013 Alumni Weekend. Attendance for the event was up, but Thompson has already started working on the plans for the 2014 event.

“I would like to see us significantly increase the number of folks who come to the annual Alumni Weekend because it is such a special time to reconnect with friends and St. Andrews,” she said.

But Thompson is not solely focusing on the alumni weekend to allow alumni to reconnect. She is working to revitalize the alumni pages on the website, designing an online newsletter and expanding the scope of social media dedicated to alumni.

“I want the alumni to be very much up to date on what’s happening at St. Andrews,” Thompson said. “It would be great to have alumni on campus for special events including music weekends, writers’ workshops or forums related to politics, literature, science and religion. But most importantly, we want all alumni to share their experience at St. Andrews with others, and continue to support the college in different ways.”
