In their own words...
"As a first generation Latin American, it was different coming here, but I soon realized that I could just be me. St. Andrews is a school for people who like small classes and a close community."

Troy Baranik returns to SA as Sports Information Director

Laurinburg, N.C. - When the need to find a sports information director arose, St. Andrews University did not have to look far to find a quality candidate.

Troy Baranik, who graduated with a sport and recreation studies degree from St. Andrews in 2011, applied upon learning that Phil Ratchford was leaving to pursue a new opportunity.

"After graduation, I did an internship with the Athletics Communications Department at Penn State University, working with the football and wrestling teams," Baranik said. "I helped out with the athletic interviews during the postgame and was also the media contact during the wrestling matches."

He also did an internship with ESPN Radio's local affiliate in State College, Pa., where he served as a game reporter.

Son of St. Andrews Wrestling Coach Joe Baranik, he had spent all four years at St. Andrews as a wrestler for the Knights, also working with the sports information department. That experience, combined with the internships, made it a natural step to apply for the sports information position.

"As a student, I did a lot of writing about the wrestling team to help promote the program," Baranik said. "My writing abilities helped me get the job."

For the spring semester, fellow alumnus James “Bear” Walls assisted Baranik.

"Bear did the stats during the games using StatCrew and posted the stats online while I wrote the game releases and posted them online," Baranik said. "I also did some of the announcing during the games."

As Walls moves on to a new position away from St. Andrews, Baranik has had to learn about the StatCrew software. He is also working to learn more about the routine of a Sports Information Director.

"The best part is getting to work with people that I already know, being able to work with my dad, working at a place where I feel comfortable and being able to see old friends again," Baranik said. "I get to really enjoy what I do."
