Golden LEAF Foundation president speaking at SAU Commencement

Laurinburg, N.C. – St. Andrews University is pleased to announce that Dan Gerlach, president of the Golden LEAF Foundation, will serve as the graduation speaker at the 115th Commencement Ceremony on May 12.

“Mr. Gerlach is highly regarded throughout the state for his leadership of the Golden LEAF Foundation,” said President Paul Baldasare. “This year alone, the Foundation provided more than 200 scholarships to student attending private colleges and universities in North Carolina, showing a strong commitment to private higher education. We are honored that he will be our speaker this year to share his thoughts and ideas on the future.”

Gerlach has served as president of the Foundation since October 2008. During that time, major Foundation initiatives have included broadband access to rural North Carolina, loan guarantees to North Carolina small business, local food and agri-biotechnology grants, and reform of the Foundation’s college scholarship program to include paid internships and leadership development opportunities.

Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded 1,088 grants totaling more than $486 million to 501(c)(3) nonprofits and governmental entities.

In addition to his work with Golden LEAF, Gerlach serves on Gov. Perdue’s Budget Reform and Accountability Commission, is treasurer of the NC Network of Grantmakers Board of Directors and is a Sunday school teacher at his church.

He holds a M.P.A. in state and local public finance from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University and bachelor’s degrees in economics and English from the University of Notre Dame. He has served as an adjunct instructor of public administration at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University.

St. Andrews Commencement Ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. on the DeTamble Library Terrace.
