Memoirist coming to special event at St. Andrews

Laurinburg, N.C. - Adam Shepard, author of Scratch Beginnings, will speak this Thursday at St. Andrews.

Free and open to the public, this special Writers' Forum event begins at 7 p.m. in the Morris Morgan Theatre.

Scratch Beginnings: Me, $25 and the Search for the American Dream, is a spirited and inspiring memoir in which the author, in a sort of "anti-Nickel and Dimed" experiment to see if the American Dream is still viable, gets of a train in Charleston, S.C., and spends 70 days in a homeless shelter. Shepard took on his journey as a personal response to the investigative journalism of Barbara Ehrenreich.

The first to admit he has had advantages that many of the working poor did not, he ran into more challenges than he could have envisioned. He worked for low wages for a labor company, sold plasma and sweet-talked his way into moving furniture for a moving company.

Shepard is a 2006 graduate of Merrimack College. He resides in Raleigh. His appearance at St. Andrews is funded by a grant from the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities College Access Network. The event is part of a program to help first year students succeed in college.
