First-Year Programs
The purpose of First-Year Programs at St. Andrews is to help students get plugged into campus and become involved. The Orientation program is designed to help first-year students take care of all the nuts and bolts of being a student and to develop skills to help them make a successful transition to college life. After new students settle into the campus community, they can participate in Welcome Week activities held during the first week of classes or join one of the student organizations.
Council of 2014
All first-year students are invited to join the class council. The purpose of the council is to provide an open forum for first-year students to voice their opinions concerning campus issues and create programs for first-year students. Past programs have included Pirates in the Pool, Dodgeball Tournaments, Winter Wonder Jam, St. Andrews Idol Karaoke Night, and trips to Carowinds.
TMT
First-year programming also sponsors a success skills workshop series where students can develop and/or enhance their skills in areas such as time management, relationships, goal setting, and money management to name a few. This program is designed to assist freshmen with the transition the college, but students of all levels are welcome to attend. Using games and open discussions, students learn while having fun. Sessions are just thirty minutes long and candy is often provided.
Emerging Leaders
During the Spring semester, a small, select group of first and second-year students are nominated by faculty and staff for the Emerging Leaders program. From the applicants, a group of 15-20 participants is chosen based on personal characteristics which indicate leadership ability. Participants build a foundation of skills and knowledge by evaluating leadership concepts, developing personal strengths, clarifying personal values, and creating strategies to be successful in leadership roles while at St. Andrews and in future endeavors. Selected students have the opportunity to receive one political science credit for completion of the program.
At the Spring 2010 Beach Retreat, students from Emerging Leaders and SHIELDS have dinner on the Intracoastal Waterway and show off their creation.
SHIELD
The SHIELD program is five person student committee devoted to providing guidance for first-year students. The committee members represent the five components of the program including Academics, Athletics, Student Life, Administration, and Education. The program is done in conjunction with the Center for Academic Success.
