More about Jim Putnam |
||
| What brought you to St. Andrews? Since we graduated from SA in the mid-70s, my wife and I have worked with the school in a variety of capacities, including two board terms and several special projects. Chris McDavid’s new gaming curriculum has a component that would be difficult to teach without additional resources, and I was in a position to provide support for a semester or so. If you could teach any course on any subject, what would it be and why? The History of Mathematics. The sciences have had as profound an effect on our advancement as a civilization as have aesthetic and religious traditions, but is difficult for people to approach. A human introduction to logical reasoning would go a long way to making the sciences more accessible. What are some of your hobbies and areas of interest outside academic life? My main interest right now is programming language design and semantics. I am also owned by a small dog. If you weren’t a university professor, what would you be doing? Sweating a 9-5 job in the tech industry, like I have for the last 30 years. |
