SAPC Women’s Tennis Picked 10th in 2005 CVAC Poll

January 21, 2005

THOMASVILLE, NC—The St. Andrews women’s tennis team was picked tenth in the 2005 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Pre-Season Poll as voted on by the leagues head coaches. Second year head coach William Carter will guide the Knights, who are coming off a 3-17 overall and 0-10 CVAC season last year.

Barton College is once again on top of the preseason poll. Head Coach Marc Walters welcomes back five starters from a squad that went a perfect 10-0 during the CVAC regular season, and also won the CVAC tournament. Barton was 24-4 overall in 2004, and advanced to the NCAA regional for the first time in 8 years. Gone to graduation is Barb Oakes, but the Lady Bulldogs welcome 3 freshmen into the fold to join a battle-tested lineup. All-CVAC standouts Jane Lewis (1 st Team) and Melissa Faulk (2 nd Team) return for their senior year to form one of the regions' top doubles teams, giving the #30 ranked Lady 'Dogs experienced leadership. Sophomore Allison Cobb (All-CVAC Honorable mention), juniors Heather Lewis and Alli Griffin, and senior Leigh Best round out the supporting cast as Barton looks to defend its title and return to the NCAA tournament. "Last year's group really put it together as a team, both on the court and in the classroom," said Walters. "They have great senior leadership, experience, and they have twice been named an ITA All-Academic Team, which shows their balance. They are just a terrific bunch of young ladies, and we're looking forward to grinding through a deep field of competition within the CVAC."

Coming in second place in the coaches’ poll was Queens University of Charlotte. The Royals are looking forward to a solid final season under fifth-year head coach Scott Handback. Seniors Kelly Bryant and Aicha Ghys will return along with sophomores Kristin McCulley and Lee-Deane Elmore from the starting lineup last year. Joining Bryant and Ghys in the starting lineup this season will be freshmen Merissa Rock, Skye Powell and Whitney Hansen. Also joining the team this year are senior Cathy Culbertson and junior-transfer Jessica Burke. Rock finished the season ranked No. 15 in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional singles poll and Burke played No. 1 singles at Methodist College last season. The Royals were ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional poll in the fall. This will be the final season at Queens for Handback, who received the USTA/Southern ITA Community Service Award for 2004.

Erskine College places third in this year’s preseason poll, reflecting the team’s regular season finish from 2003-04. The Fleet, who went 8-2 in the conference last season return all of their players and also welcome freshman Jennifer Gennaoui. The New Jersey native, who finished the fall season with an 11-1 record, will play at the #1 spot for the Fleet and will look to make an immediate impact on the already talented squad. Top returnees include senior Radha Bharathi, junior Chrissy Taylor, and sophomores Julie Mages and Ellen Dawson. Mages was named a CVAC 1st Team member last season, while Bharathi, Dawson, and Taylor were CVAC Honorable Mention team members. Erskine’s top 6 will be rounded out by sophomore Miroslava Stojkovic, who went undefeated in the conference last season at the #5 spot.

Rounding out the Coaches Preseason Poll 4-12 are: Pfeiffer, Mount Olive, Anderson, Limestone, Coker, Belmont Abbey, and St. Andrews respectively.
