Converse Tennis Defeats St. Andrews Women, 8-1
February 25, 2004
Laurinburg, NC—Nicholi Marsh (Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Canada) and Megan Zarnowiec (Maitland, Florida) provided the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s tennis team with their only point in an 8-1 loss to Converse College on Wednesday afternoon at the Scotland Tennis Complex.
Bianca Martina Rohner, Sandra Diaz, Christine Galop, and Megan Munn won pretty easily in their singles matches for the All Stars. Danielle Beck squeaked by the Knights April Rowe (Elizabeth City, NC) 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 2 singles. St. Andrews had to forfeit one singles point.
Marsh and Zarnowiec won an 8-5 match at No. 2 doubles for the Knights. Rowe and Mandy Coltrain (Williamston, NC) played a very competitive set at No. 1 doubles but lost 8-4 to Rohner/Diaz. Munn and Virginia Jones won the No. 3 doubles match, 8-2.
The All Stars improved to 3-1 in the spring while the Knights fell to 1-4. St. Andrews hosts Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference rival Limestone on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

St. Andrews Tennis Splits With Coker

Laurinburg, NC—After the Coker College women’s tennis team defeated Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference rival St. Andrews, 8-1, the Knights men’s team barely had enough time before the rain started on Tuesday afternoon to defeat the Cobras 5-0.
Nicholi Marsh (Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Canada) won her second consecutive CVAC match at No. 1 singles to give St. Andrews their only point. Coker won all three doubles sets.
Jennifer Crocker (Union, SC), Neely Davis (York, SC), and Jen Konopa (Jefferson, OH) won their singles matches for the Lady Cobras and Andrea Santos (Gerber, CA) took No. 3 singles after Megan Zarnowiec had to retire due to illness.

BAC Women Defeat St. Andrew in Tennis, 7-2

Laurinburg, NC—The Belmont Abbey women’s tennis team won all three doubles points in route to a 7-2 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference victory over St. Andrews Sunday afternoon at the Scotland Tennis Complex.
The meeting was the first conference match for both schools as the Crusaders improved to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the CVAC while the Knights fell to 1-2 and 0-1.
Carly Curry (Daytona Beach, FL), Donella Ortega (Guyaquil, Ecuador), Emily Arthur (Boiling Springs, NC), and Priscilla Kelly (Hilton Head, SC) each won their singles matches for Belmont Abbey in straight sets.
Nicholi Marsh (Liverpool, Nova Scotia, Canada) and Aubrie Beer (Seattle, Washington) provided St. Andrews with their only points at No. 1 and 6 singles, respectively.
The Knights host Coker for a CVAC match-up at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. The match is a rescheduled match from last Tuesday that was postponed due to bad weather.

St. Andrews Women’s Tennis Wins Season Opener
February 10, 2004
Laurinburg, NC—Megan Zarnowiec and Alden Lye won at No. 4 and 5 singles, respectively, to give St. Andrews Presbyterian College a 5-4 victory over visiting Fayetteville State. The match was the season opener for both schools.
The Knights won No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles by default as the Lady Broncos only had five players.
April Rowe and Mandy Coltrain provided a win for SAPC at No. 1 doubles defeating Brahsheedah Elohim and Annette Jackson 8-5. FSU responded at No. 2 doubles with an 8-2 victory from Dana Maynor and Tamika McLean over Nicholi Marsh and Zarnowiec.
Zarnowiec won easily, 6-3, 6-1, over McLean to put the Knights up 4-2. Jackson kept the Lady Broncos alive with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Rowe at No. 2 singles. Lye supplied the crucial fifth point for St. Andrews winning 6-3, 6-2 over LeKeisha McDow.
March (No. 1 singles) and Coltrain (No. 3 singles) grabbed early leads winning their first sets. However, neither could hold on and Elohim and Maynor provided the final two points to Fayetteville State. The Coltrain/Maynor match needed tie breakers in all three sets.
St. Andrews returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, February 11 as they travel to UNC Pembroke at 2:00 pm.

Knights Have Good Showing in Coker
September 27-28, 2003
HARTSVILLE, SC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College tennis teams played well in the first outing of the 2003/04 season at the Coker College Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The weekend provided a good start for first year head coach William Carter, as the Knights went up against several good Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference opponents.
With only three players, the women collected just one individual win against the tough opponents. In the A-Flight, Nicholi Marsh lost 6-0, 6-1 to Lees-McRae. April Rowe, playing in the B-Flight, lost 6-1, 6-3 to Coker. Both Marsh and Rowe lost to UNC Pembroke players in the consolation bracket. Mandy Coltrain, playing in the C-Flight lost her first match 6-1, 6-1 against Barton. Coltrain bounced back with a 6-0, 6-1 win against NC Wesleyan in the consolation bracket. Coltrain finally lost in the consolation bracket final against Lees-McRae.
Marsh and Rowe competed in the doubles for St. Andrews losing both matches 8-1 against Barton and UNC Pembroke.
The inaugural outing for the Knights men’s tennis team was very successful with six individual and two doubles matches won.
In the men’s A-Flight Miguel Quinones lost in the first round to the No. 1 seed and eventual champion from Lees-McRae. Johnny Janne also fell in the first round against Barton. Janne lost in a good three-set match against Coker to be eliminated from the consolation draw. Quinones went on to win the A-Flight consolation bracket with a three set win against Coker and a withdrawal in the finals.
Michael Okada defeated Limestone 6-3, 6-1 in the first round of the B-Flight and then lost to Barton. Daniel Reuben lost his first round match up against Coker only to go on to win the B-Flight consolation bracket. Reuben knocked off NC Wesleyan 6-0, 6-2 before winning in a long and well played 6-3, 3-6 (10-4) match against Limestone.
Jermaine Sadambura played strong in the C-Flight winning his first match against Limestone, 6-7, 6-3, 6-0. Sadambura faced Barton’s No. 1 player in the second round and lost 6-0, 6-3. Sadambura finished fourth in the C-Flight after losing in the third place consolation match against another Barton player.
Quinones and Janne teamed up to win their first round match against Coker, 9-8, in the doubles A-Flight. Barton’s No. 2 seed defeated Okada and Reuben in the first round and Quinones/Janne in the second round. Okada/Reuben went on win the consolation bracket with an 8-1 win over Coker.

Hoke County Native to Head St. Andrews Tennis

LAURINBURG, N.C – Returning to the state of North Carolina was a homecoming in more ways than one for William Carter, who was named head coach of the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s and women’s tennis programs.
A North Carolina native, Carter is a 1988 graduate of Hoke County High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in business and economics from St. Andrews in 1992. He began his collegiate tennis career at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., and was a freshman on a team that ranked 13th nationally in the NAIA. Carter spent the remainder of his collegiate career at St. Andrews, playing No. 1 singles and doubles for three seasons. As a junior, he was seeded 12th in the NAIA Regional Tournament.
Carter began his coaching career at St. Andrews, serving as head men’s golf coach for two years and assisting with men’s and women’s tennis as well as women’s basketball during the 1993-94 season. He then spent four years at Flora Macdonald Academy, where he assumed a variety of roles, including athletic director, interim headmaster, and coach for boys’ and girls’ basketball, tennis, and golf.
Carter, who will also coach the women's basketball program, most recently served as head coach for women’s tennis and women’s basketball at Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga. He joined the Wesleyan staff as women’s basketball coach in 1998 and added the duties of women’s tennis coach in 2001. During his tenure at Wesleyan, Carter also coached volleyball for three seasons.
He earned a Master of Science in sports management from the United States Sports Academy in 1994 and is a certified teaching professional with the United States Professional Tennis Registry.
The Knights last fielded a men’s tennis team in 1998. The St. Andrews women’s program was reinstated during the 2001-02 season, and the men will begin competition in 2003-04
