Converse tennis slips past St. Andrews
March 29, 2008 LAURINBURG, N.C.—Senior Kellie Milam (Emporia, Kan.) won at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles for host St. Andrews Presbyterian College but visiting Converse College took advantage of three default victories en route to a 6-3 Conference Carolinas women’s tennis victory on Saturday afternoon at the Scotland County Tennis Complex. The Valkyries picked up their first conference win of the season, improving to 4-12 overall and 1-9 in the league. The Lady Knights fall to 0-6 overall and 0-6 in the conference. Milam teamed up with junior Morgan Worthington (Kinston, N.C.) to win the top doubles match 8-5. The Knights, with only five active players on Saturday, had to forfeit at No. 3 doubles to give the visitors a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. St. Andrews’ defaulted the last singles match and Worthington had to default due to a wrist injury at No. 1 singles to give Converse a commanding 4-1 advantage before say singles match started. A Lee Cantey 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles secured the team victory for the Valkyries but the Knights still managed to win three of six matches decided on the court. Milam helped SAPC secure another point with a 6-2, 7-5 straight set victory at No. 3. Milam has two singles wins on the season. Sophomore Carrie Jones (Spring Hope, N.C.) netted the Knights final point winning a third-set super tie-breaker at No. 5. Jones’ 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory was her third singles win of the season and second straight.
