Lady Bobcats tennis rallies past St. Andrews
February 24, 2007 LAURINBURG, N.C.—Lees-McRae College rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles play by sweeping all six singles matches to defeat host St. Andrews Presbyterian College, 7-2, in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women’s tennis action on Saturday afternoon at the Scotland County Tennis Complex. The Lady Bobcats, who improved to 2-2 on the season and 1-2 in the CVAC, completed the comeback with straight set victories from freshman No. 2 Kasey Mabe (Lawsinville, N.C.), sophomore No. 3 Jenna Simpson (Petrolia, Ontario, Canada), freshman No. 4 Cameron Joyce (Lenoir, N.C.), and sophomore No. 6 Katie Hawkins (Old Fort, N.C.). St. Andrews (0-5 Overall; 0-2 CVAC) won the top two doubles matches to take the early advantage. The top doubles pair of sophomore Morgan Worthington (Kinston, N.C.) and junior Nikki Garrison (Laurinburg, N.C.) won 8-6, while the tandem of junior Kellie Milam (Emporia, Kan.) and sophomore Rachel Hanna (Concord, N.H.) gutted out a 9-7 victory for the Knights at the second draw. Joyce and senior Katherine Smith (Banner Elk, N.C.) cut the LMC deficit to 2-1 heading into singles with an 8-2 victory in the third doubles match. In the top singles match, Worthington won the first set for the Knights but freshman Ashley Mayers (Miami, Fla.) rallied back to take the contest (2-6, 6-1, 6-1). Smith completed the singles sweep for the visitors at No. 4 by also rallying from a first set loss to Hanna (4-6, 6-3, 6-4).
