UNCP women's tennis spoils Lady Knights opener
February 7, 2007 LAURINBURG, N.C.—Sophomore Rachel Hanna (Concord, N.H.) recorded the only singles match victory for host St. Andrews Presbyterian College as the University of North Carolina at Pembroke women’s tennis team won 7-2 Wednesday afternoon at the Scotland County Tennis Complex.
Freshman Carrie Jones (Spring Hope, N.C.) almost won a pair of matches for the Lady Knights (0-1 Overall). In doubles-play Jones paired up with sophomore Charleen Cook (Riverside, Calif.) for an 8-6 win in the No. 3 slot. Jones continued her strong play at No. 6 singles but fell in a third-game super-set. Freshman Melissa Locklear rallied past Jones after dropping the first set 1-6 by tying the match in the second 6-4. In the super-set race Jones had one match-point opportunity at 10-9 but Locklear rattled off the final three points to win 12-10. The Lady Braves (2-0 Overall) also won the first two doubles matches and the top four seeded singles contests in straight sets to pull out the 7-2 victory. St. Andrews will next visit non-conference Catawba College (Salisbury, N.C.) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Singles Doubles |
