Knights netters win second straight to start North/South duals

WILSON, NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s tennis team opened up play at the 2006 North/South Dual Matches hosted by Barton College with a dominating 5-1 victory over Brevard College. The Knights dropped their final two matches on Saturday to Lenoir-Rhyne (6-1) and North Greenville (6-2).

The Knights, who are 2-10 after this weekends play, will make a long trek into South Carolina next weekend for a pair of CVAC contests. SAPC will face host Anderson University (Anderson, SC) on Friday at 3:00 p.m. and visit Erskine College on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.

St. Andrews 5, Brevard 1 (at Barton)

The Knights won all three of the singles matches that were played in route to their second straight victory after defeating CVAC rival Lees-McRae on Sunday by a 7-2 score. No. 1 freshman Ashley Walters (St. Pauls, NC) blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0; No. 2 freshman Morgan Worthington (Kinston, NC) and No. 3 sophomore Kellie Milam (Emporia, KS) both dominated their respective competitors by 6-0, 6-1 scores.

Walters and Worthington teamed up for an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles while No. 3 pair of Milam and freshman Rachel Hanna ( Concord, NH) rolled 8-0. Senior April Rowe (Elizabeth City, NC) and freshman Charleen Cook (Riverside, CA) fell 8-2. The doubles win by Milam/Hanna was the third straight for the duo.

Lenoir-Rhyne 6, St. Andrews 1 (at Recreation Park)

Rowe won her second singles match of the year for the Knights only point against Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday morning as the Lady Bears won 6-1. Rowe won her No. 5 match 6-2, 6-3.

Both Walters/Worthington and Rowe/freshman Shannon Hitzeman (Chicago, IL) lost very close doubles contests by matching 9-7 scores.

After dropping all three doubles points, St. Andrews fought back to take two singles matches before falling 6-2 to North Greenville College. Worthington won her second singles match of the weekend 6-3, 6-2 and Milam improved her team best singles wins to five with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
