Lady Bulldogs tennis defeats Knights in CVAC openers
February 16, 2006 LAURINBURG, NC—The Barton College women’s tennis team shutout host St. Andrews Presbyterian College, 9-0, in both squads Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC) season opener on Thursday at the Scotland County Tennis Complex.
Chelsea Hsieh and Vanesa Van der Heever started the scoring for Barton with an 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles over Ashley Walters and Morgan Worthington. The Lady Bulldogs swept the doubles matches with 8-2 wins in the other two doubles contests. In singles play, senior April Rowe won the most games for St. Andrews, but still fell victim to Jessica Galasso (6-3, 6-1) at No. 5 singles. No. 1 Hsieh blanked Walters (6-0, 6-0); No. 2 Van der Heever downed Worthington (6-1, 6-0); No. 3 Allison Cobb defeated Kellie Milam (6-1, 6-0); No. 4 Meaghan Lynch edged Charleen Cook (6-2, 6-1); and No. 6 Summer Chase was victorious over Shannon Hitzeman (6-2, 6-0) The Knights visit CVAC rival Mount Olive on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. while the Lady Bulldogs travel to non-conference USC Aiken on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the CVAC while the Knights dropped to 0-2 and 0-1.
