UNCP women's tennis spoils Knights opener

PEMBROKE, NC—The University of North Carolina at Pembroke women’s tennis team won all six singles matches and all three doubles matches to down St. Andrews 9-0 in the season opener Tuesday afternoon. With the win, UNCP starts the year 1-0, while St. Andrews fell to 0-1.

The Lady Braves got the season off to a hot start winning all three doubles points to give UNCP a quick 3-0 lead. The doubles combos of Stacey Wood and Natalie Dies, along with Erin Saltzman and Jessica Figgins disposed over their opponents 8-2, while Ivana Music’ and Amy Hardin downed St. Andrews duo of Kellie Milam (Emporia, KS) and Shannon Hitzeman (Chicago, IL) 8-4.

In the singles matches, Pembroke overmatched St. Andrews winning all six matches by decisive margins. At number one, Wood continued her solid play by blanking Ashley Walters (St. Pauls, NC) 6-0 in the first set and then clinched the point with a 6-1 win in the second set. Saltzman, Wood’s doubles partner, then followed up with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Morgan Worthington (Kinston, NC) at number two, while Dies edged Milam 6-2, 6-1 to take the win at number three.

At number four, Music’ tallied wins of 6-1 and 6-0 over Charleen Cook (Riverside, CA), as teammate Figgins took down April Rowe (Elizabeth City, NC) 6-3, 6-0 in the number five match, while the freshman, Hardin, won her first collegiate match 6-2, 6-4 over Tanya Darmanie (Santa Cruz, Trinidad).

St. Andrews will host their home-opener against non-conference Catawba on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
