Laurinburg, NC- There could not have been a better day for soccer than this afternoon. A sunny day, cooled by a steady breeze, gave fans the chance to enjoy a very close game of Conference Carolinas women’s soccer. With only one goal being scored in the game, the Knights dropped a nail-biter to the Valkyries of Converse College 0-1.

The ladies played some of the best soccer they have executed this season. Their hustle and dedication could be seen until the very end. Seniors Jenna Hughes (Lusby, MD) and Chelsea Ross (Newark, NY) led the Knights (1-12 Overall, 0-10 Conference) with four shots each. Hughes fired two of her shots at Valkyries’ (2-11-1, 2-7) keeper Katie Wasylko, who earned six saves from SAU; while Ross, Hannah Wilson (Salisbury, NC), Olivia Taylor (Fountain Inn, SC), and Megan Jolly (Waterloo, NY) each booted one shot at Wasylko.

Freshman keeper Hannah Platt (Burgaw, NC) faced nine of the 15 shots taken by Converse. Platt grabbed eight saves and only missed one ball in today’s game. In a fast-paced play inside the box, Converse freshman Samantha Barron sent a cross pass in front of the goal to teammate Hilary Parkins. Parkins used her good placement to send a header straight into the left corner of the net, scoring her first goal of the season and giving the Valkyries what would become their game winning goal and second conference and overall win of the season.

Look for more women’s soccer action on Monday, October 17 as the ladies travel to Francis Marion University for a regional competition against the FMU Patriots at 4:30 PM.
