Box Score

Laurinburg, NC- It was a cold, rainy day at Knights Field as the St. Andrews Women’s Soccer team hosted the Royals of Queens University of Charlotte. The Knights struggled to keep up with the Royals as Queens took their first Conference Carolinas win of the season, leaving the Knights with a 0-5 loss.

Senior Shana Schroeder (Newark, NY) took the Knights’ only shot on goal at Royals keeper Kelsey Seretis. Queens University of Charlotte (1-0 Conference, 1-5 Overall) took control of the game early and blasted a total of 44 shots; 22 of which were shots on goal at freshman keeper Hanna Platt (Burgaw, NC), who earned 17 saves for St. Andrews (0-3, 1-4).

The Royals penetrated the Knights’ defense and scored the majority of their goals from inside the box. In fact, two of their five goals were headers from right in front of the goal. Lauren Vawter, a senior at Queens, scored the first and fifth goals for the Royals, her first two goals of the 2011 season. Vawter and Katheryn Sylvester showed their athleticism by heading the ball over Platt’s hands and netting the ball. Brooke Foil and Sarah Johnson scored the other two goals for the Royals.

With a fast paced offense, three Royals players were also able to grab assists. Amanda Wright sent an air pass to Vawter to assist her header at 14:49. Next, Kristen Wright played the ball directly to Foil’s feet, helping her get the ball by Platt. Earning two assists, Macie McGuffin not only set up Sylvester for her header, but also found Johnson in a great position to take a clear shot into the goal.

The Knights will be on the road this week as they travel to Mount Olive College (Mount Olive, NC) for another Conference Carolinas match. The first whistle is scheduled to blow at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, September 20.
