Knights Swoop Past HawksSeptember 6, 2011 Laurinburg, NC- The Knights were not going to let anything stop them from playing this afternoon, even Mother Nature. After a 30 minute weather delay, play commenced on Knights Field; where St. Andrews took on the Hawks of Chowan University (Murfreesboro, NC). With another round of rain on its way from the south, the Knights battled through slippery conditions and slid past Chowan with a 6-0 shutout, giving SAPC its first women’s soccer victory of the season. St. Andrews put a beating on the ball, taking a total of 52 shots at Hawks keeper Shauna Anderson. Freshman Rachel Yount (Granite Falls, NC) started the Knights’ six goal run 23 minutes into the first half, when she scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Sophomore midfielder Hannah Wilson (Salisbury, NC) aided the Knights twice as she earned two assists, one to Yount and the other to senior Chelsea Ross (Newark, NY), who scored her first goal of the season at the 27:36 minute mark. Freshman Rebekah Webster (Pleasant Grove, UT) rounded out the Knights’ first trio of goals after 30 minutes of play, earning her first collegiate goal as well. The unrelenting Knights stayed strong in the second half when they started to see more aggressive play from the Hawks. As the second half unfolded, the Hawks had several close shots, with a few just going wide. Constant pressure on the ball from the Knights led them to yet another trio of goals. Juliann Levesque (Greensboro, NC), Heather Cockburn (Whitby, Ontario, Canada), and Olivia Taylor (Fountain Inn, SC) contributed the team’s remaining three goals, each scoring one. The St. Andrews freshman stood their ground and showed their dedication to the team with Levesque and Cockburn each scoring their first collegiate goal; leading to a total of four freshmen who put their names in the score book for the first time. Despite the impeding weather, SAPC fans still showed their support for the Knights. The dribbling skills and ball maneuvering exhibited by the squad drove the crowd wild, as the St. Andrews women maintained control of the ball for the majority of the game. For their next appearance, the Knights will be heading to Banner Elk, NC, to go up against the Bobcats of Lees-McRae College. The Saturday, September 10 game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 P.M. -GO KNIGHTS- |
