MISENHEIMER, N.C.—Freshman Tara Barker (Kernersville, N.C.) had two of the Knights three shots and drew a potential game-tying penalty kick in the 78th minute for visiting No. 7 seed St. Andrews Presbyterian College, but No. 2 seed Pfeiffer University escaped with the 1-0 victory in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Women’s Soccer Tournament on Halloween.

The Falcons, who improved to 10-7-3 on the season, advance to the semifinals of the tourney with the one-goal win and will face No. 6 seed Queens University of Charlotte at Noon on Friday afternoon in Mount Olive, N.C. The Lady Knights conclude their best season in league play with a 7-9-4 overall ledger.

The two teams played an even first half with the hosts holding a 6-2 edge in shots but SAPC junior goalkeeper Garrison Burton (Atlanta, Ga.) made five of her game-high nine saves in the opening 45 minutes.

Pfeiffer had a quality scoring chance in the 43rd minute when Megan Reaves sent in a long cross to the far post where Kirsten Bartsch was waiting, however, Bartsch’s header was deflected wide by Burton with a diving stop that kept the game scoreless through the first half.

The Falcons came out of the halftime intermission fast and in the 53rd minute they broke through with the lone goal of the game. Angela Reale took a pass from Madison Kerth and beat the keeper to give Pfeiffer a 1-0 lead.

Pfeiffer continued to control play and had numerous shots on goal but could not increase their lead.

The Knights best scoring opportunity came with only 12 minutes and 51 seconds left in the game, when Barker was taken down inside the Falcon box. Freshman Sam Frazer (Goldsboro, N.C.) stepped up on the ensuing PK and drilled a shot that was heading into the right side of the net but netminder Suzie Hinman made a diving stop to keep the shutout in tack.

Pfeiffer out shot St. Andrews 18-3 in the game while taking all seven corner kicks. SAPC was without leading scorer Kerrie Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) because of prior cautions.
