Lady Knights soccer edges Erskine on 'Senior Day'

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Juniors Courtney Ross (Newark, N.Y.) and Kerrie Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) scored goals for host St. Andrews Presbyterian College en route to a 2-1 Conference Carolinas victory over visiting Erskine College on Saturday’s ‘Senior Day’.
The Lady Knights, who extended their home undefeated streak to six games, scored both goals in the first half and held on to improve to 7-6-4 overall and 4-3-3 in Conference Carolinas action.
The Flying Fleet, who saw their winless streak extended to eight games, kept fighting and finally broke up the shutout attempt in the final minutes.
After 30 minutes of scoreless action, St. Andrews busted out with a pair of goals in a one minute and seven second span. Ross started the scoring for the Knights with her first goal in an SAPC uniform in the 34th minute. Brown, who assisted on Ross’ tally, added her team-high seventh goal of the season just a minute later. Brown is averaging over one point per game after her three-point performance (18 points on the season). Freshman Tara Barker ( Kernersville, N.C.) assisted on the second goal that doubled up the score.
St. Andrews maintained the 2-0 lead at halftime, when the coaching staff took a couple minutes to honor the Knights five seniors including Crystal Olu-Taylor (Raleigh, N.C.), Jamie Gomez (Saugus, Calif.), Kellie Milam (Emporia, Kan.), Chrisy Stapleton (Allen Park, Mich.), and Katie Miller (Sinking Springs, Pa.).
Junior goalkeeper Garrison Burton (Atlanta, Ga.) was going for her seventh shutout of the season but freshman Amanda Tinker (Woodruff, S.C.) was able to cut the deficit in half with a goal in the 88th minute. Tinker’s goal at the 87:06 mark was her team-high eighth score of the season.
Burton earned her seventh victory by making five saves while Erskine counterpart Si’Ara Washington (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) make two stops.
Both teams took eight shots while the visitors had a 3-1 edge on corner kicks. SAPC was flagged offsides more times, 4-1.
St. Andrews visits non-conference local rival UNC-Pembroke on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. while Erskine hosts Conference Carolinas foe Anderson University at the same time. |
