MOUNT OLIVE, N.C.—Mount Olive College extended its unbeaten streak to six games with a 2-0 victory over St. Andrews in Conference Carolinas women’s soccer Wednesday at Ray and Chris Amon Field.
The win pushes Mount Olive’s record to the .500 mark for the first time this season and moves the Trojans within two points of the top four in the Conference Carolinas standings.
Gina Dos Santos broke a scoreless tie with a goal on a free kick in the 30th minute and Alyecia Higgins added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute to lead the Trojans. Mount Olive (6-6-3 overall, 4-1-3 Conference Carolinas) withstood a pair of dangerous challenges in the first five minutes of the match to keep the contest scoreless throughout most of the first half in a battle of teams on extended unbeaten streaks. St. Andrews (6-6-4, 3-3-3) was unbeaten in its previous seven matches prior to Wednesday.
The Trojans broke the deadlock at the 29:55 mark when Dos Santos was fouled just above the box. Dos Santos lined a shot from 20-yards out over a five-player wall to give Mount Olive a 1-0 lead at halftime.
St. Andrews’ best scoring opportunity came in the 18th minute on senior Crystal Olu-Taylor’s (Raleigh, N.C.) 18-yard shot, but Trojan goalkeeper Ali O’Steen dove to deflect the ball wide of the left post. The Knights were unable to capitalize on the ensuing corner kick.
Mount Olive had four corner kicks in the first eight minutes of the second half, but the lead remained at one goal until a Trojan counterattack in the final 10 minutes.
Kate Painter took a long service down the left sideline and crossed into the box to Jackie Jimenez, who one-touched the ball to Higgins. The freshman chipped the ball past the St. Andrews keeper at 81:58 for her sixth goal of the season.
O’Steen finished with six saves for her fourth shutout of the season. Knight junior goalkeeper Garrison Burton (Atlanta, Ga.) finished with four saves.
After a 2-6-1 start, Mount Olive is 4-0-2 in its last six matches. St. Andrews is 4-1-3 in its last eight contests.
MOC held a slim 12-11 shot advantage with both teams putting six shots on frame.
St. Andrews celebrates ‘Senior Day’ Saturday as the Knights play host to Erskine College in Conference Carolinas action at 2:00 p.m.
