LAURINBURG, N.C.—Junior Kerrie Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals en route to a 3-1 Conference Carolinas women’s soccer victory over Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday afternoon.
Brown’s game-tying and game-winning goals for the Lady Knights, who evened their record at 5-5-3 overall and 3-2-3 in the conference, extended their undefeated streak to five games. The Royals dropped their third straight contest, falling to 3-9-1 and 2-3-1.
Royals junior Kari Byzewski (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored an early goal to give the visitors and early 1-0 lead. Senior Tamara Diaz-Matosas (Lilburn, Ga.) started the scoring opportunity with a centering pass to classmate Jackie Groff (Charlotte, N.C.), who then fed the ball to Byzewski on the left wing. Byzewski then placed her team-high third goal of the season inside the far post just 9:01 into the contest.
Queens maintained the slim one-goal advantage for most of the first half until Brown struck for two goals in a quick two minute and four second span. Brown scored the equalizer after receiving the ball back on a short corner kick to freshman Tara Barker (Kernersville, N.C.). Brown then blasted a tough-angle shot into the far-upper corner of the goal in the 38th minute. Brown had another opportunity a couple minutes later on a free kick. Brown crushed the long free ball from 30-yards out under the crossbar to propel the Knights into a 2-1 lead just before halftime.
St. Andrews ’ junior goalkeeper Garrison Burton (Atlanta, Ga.), who was named the current Conference Carolinas women’s soccer Player of the Week on Tuesday, kept the Royals off the scoreboard for the rest of the game making three of her five saves in the second half.
The Knights added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute, when freshman Sam Frazer (Goldsboro, N.C.) centered a free kick to senior Chrisy Stapleton (Allen Park, Mich.) at the top of the Queens box. Stapleton one-timed the crossing ball into the netting for her first goal of the season.
Sophomore Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va.) and freshman Michelle Landry (Atlanta, Ga.) each made one stop in split time between the pipes for the Royals.
