LAURINBURG, N.C.—Junior Myra Miller (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Hannah Sheffield (Lexington, N.C.) each scored their first goals of the season to lead the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s soccer team to a 2-0 non-conference victory over North Carolina Wesleyan College on Sunday afternoon.
Junior goalkeeper Garrison Burton (Atlanta, Ga.) tied her season-high in saves to help the Lady Knights post their fourth shutout in their last five games. Burton made nine total stops as SAPC improved to 3-5-2 on the season.
The Battling Bishops (2-7) out shot the Knights 13-11 with nine of their 13 shots coming in the first half but Burton was saves on all six shots on frame, including several diving saves, keeping the game scoreless through halftime.
St. Andrews finally put a goal on the scoreboard in the 57th minute. Junior Kerrie Brown ( Rochester, N.Y.) made a long throw-in to Miller in the visitor’s box. After trapping the ball, Miller poked a tough angle shot from the right endline over the Wesleyan goalie and into the net.
The Knights kept pressing with the one-goal lead and doubled up the score at the 63:00 minute mark. Freshman Marie Savage (Lyons, N.Y.) made a long crossing pass to Sheffield, who then drilled a shot from just inside the 18-yard line into the back of the NCWC goal.
Bishops sophomore Meredith Hester (Reston, Va.) led all players with five shots. The Knights held a 7-4 advantage on corner kicks but were whistled for more fouls, 8-5. Sophomore netminder Sara Hess (Middletown, Md.) made a team-high four saves for NC Wesleyan in 63-minutes of action.
