LAURINBURG, N.C.—Senior Crystal Olu-Taylor (Raleigh, N.C.) recorded a goal and an assist on Saturday leading the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s soccer team to a 2-0 Conference Carolinas shutout of Converse College.
The Lady Knights, who are undefeated in their last three games, improved to 2-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in Conference Carolinas play. The All Stars have lost eight straight, falling to 1-8 and 0-5.
Converse started off strong and just missed scoring first when a senior Ashley Carry (Amarillo, Texas) shot when off the Knights goalpost in the second minute.
St. Andrews settled down and maintained majority of the play throughout the afternoon, totaling a commanding 14-3 shot advantage. The Knights looked to get their first goal when freshman Sam Frazer (Goldsboro, N.C.) and Olu-Taylor took back-to-back shots but Converse freshman goalie Ashley Mercuri (Ontario, Canada) made both saves.
The tandem of Frazer and Olu-Taylor finally got the Knights on the board in the 38th minute with another scoring opportunity. Olu-Taylor fed a nice leading pass to Frazer, who then placed the accurate shot into the All Stars cage for her first collegiate goal.
SAPC came out of the halftime intermission with a furry and Olu-Taylor scored an insurance goal just 22 seconds into the second half. Olu-Taylor’s first goal of the season gave her a three-point day.
The Knights had several other opportunities to extend their lead including a junior Jodi Frazier (Lexington, N.C.) shot off the crossbar. Olu-Taylor just missed a five-point day when she took a penalty kick for St. Andrews in the 73rd minute. However, Mercuri made the diving save on the Olu-Taylor shot and then another save on the ensuing rebound shot by sophomore Carrie Brown (Spring Hope, N.C.). Mercuri finished with seven saves for the All Stars.
Junior goalie Garrison Burton (Atlanta, Ga.) only needed to make one save in the first half to earn her second straight shutout. Burton and the Knight defense have not allowed a goal in over 271 minutes.
St. Andrews will host non-conference USC-Aiken on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. |
