ANDERSON, S.C.—Freshman midfielder Marie Savage (Lyons, N.Y.) provided St. Andrews Presbyterian College with a late lead after scoring her first collegiate goal, but host Anderson University took the 2-1 come-from-behind overtime victory in Conference Carolinas women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Smethers Field.
After a scoreless first half, Savage broke the scoreless contest in the 61st minute by drilling a shot from the right wing past the Lady Trojans goalkeeper.
Savage’s first collegiate tally at the 60:10 mark looked like it was going to hold up to give St. Andrews (0-3 overall; 0-1 Conference Carolinas) its first win of the season.
The Lady Trojans held a 14-11 shot advantage but junior goalkeeper Garrison Burton (Atlanta, Ga.) was strong in net for the Lady Knights making a game-high seven saves.
Burton and St. Andrews were close to posting the shutout, but Anderson (3-2; 1-0) finally broke through when Lynne Flint scored the tying goal in the 82nd minute.
Heading into overtime tied at 1-1, the Trojans used the momentum of the late goal in regulation to score the game-winner just 3:18 into the first extra 10 minute period. Virginia Cates ended the match with the golden goal on a header from a Kelli Johnson pass. Kelli Whitfield took the win in net for AU making five saves.
SAPC held a slim 6-5 edge on corner kicks and senior Chrisy Stapleton (Allen Park, Mich.) had a team-high two shots for the Knights.
St. Andrews next visits Conference Carolinas foe Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C., on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. |
