GAINESVILLE, Ga.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s soccer team was unable to convert on any of their eight shots, and host North Georgia College & State University scored a late goal to pull out a slim 1-0 victory in a rain-drenched opener for both teams on Sunday afternoon at Allen Creek Park.
The Lady Saints (1-0-0) held an 18-8 shot advantage but Knights junior goalkeeper Garrison Burton (Atlanta, Ga.) made three saves in the first half as the two squads battled to a scoreless tie at halftime.
The match remained a 0-0 tie until late in the afternoon as officials delayed the game for 100 minutes due to lightning.
Freshman Casey Smith (Stockbridge, Ga.) scored the lone-goal of the day in the 81st minute. Smith ripped a free kick from just outside the SAPC box, placing it just inside the far post for her first collegiate goal.
The Lady Knights (0-1-0) had several opportunities throughout the contest including six shots by junior Kerrie Brown (Rochester, N.Y.). In her first game with St. Andrews, Brown had several scoring chances including one shot that went off the Saints crossbar.
Freshman goalkeeper Jessica English (Snellville, Ga.) made saves on all three SAPC shots on goal en route to the 90-minute shutout. Burton finished with a game-high seven saves.
The Lady Knights will have nine days to prepare for their next match, when they visit Greensboro College on Tuesday, September 4th at 4:00 p.m. |
