Wingate women's soccer defeats Knights with late surge

WINGATE, NC—The Wingate University women’s soccer team (10-4 overall) defeated the St. Andrews Presbyterian College Knights (0-11 overall) Wednesday afternoon by a score of 3-0 with all three tallies coming in the second half.

Leading the way for the hosts was junior midfielder Laura Van Leer (Lilburn, GA) with two goals. The contest was played at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field.
 
The Bulldogs outshot the Knights 33-1 on the day. Wingate freshman forward Caroline Harvischak (Palmetto, GA) started the scoring in the 49th minute on a shot from ten yards out that was set up by junior forward Becca Noonan (Brooklyn Park, MN). 
 
Van Leer then capped the scoring with two virtually identical goals off crosses from sophomore midfielder Kelly Mottola (Middletown, NY). The first score was a Van Leer header in the 59th minute, while the second tally was a one-timer from her foot in the 62nd minute.
 
St. Andrews freshman goalkeeper Garrison Burton (Atlanta, GA) had season-high 17 saves in the match as Wingate managed to have 20 shots on goal. Burton kept the Knights in the game with eight saves in the first 45-minutes to keep the game scoreless in the first half.

Wingate freshman goalkeeper Kathryn Smith (Indian Trail, NC) had one save to pick up the shutout for the Bulldogs. Smith has five shutouts this season.

Sophomore Knight Jamie Gomez (Saugus, CA) had the only shot on goal for SAPC.

The Knights return to Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conferenceleague play Saturday, hosting Erskine College Saturday at 2 p.m. on St. Andrews’ ‘Homecoming’ and ‘Senior Day’.
