September 14, 2005
LAURINBURG, NC—Junior Jamie Clark converted on a penalty kick late in the first half to break a scoreless tie that propelled the UNC Pembroke women’s soccer team, who is ranked No. 4 in the Southeast Region of the NSCAA poll, to a 4-0 shutout of host St. Andrews Wednesday.
The Lady Braves remain untarnished at 5-0 while the Knights fell to 0-4.
SAPC held Pembroke scoreless until the Knights were called for a hand ball within their own box in the 38th minute that gave Clark a penalty kick. Clark placed the ball in the upper, left hand portion of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Freshman Sarah Day scored the Braves second goal in the 52nd minute, dribbling into scoring range and ripping a shot off the far post and into the Knights goal. Junior Melanie Cobb extended UNCP’s lead to 3-0 less than a minute later when freshman Nisa Akins leading pass led to a Cobb breakaway. Senior Erin Rowley scored the Braves last goal in the 84th minute on a Cobb crossing pass.
The Knights best scoring chances came from freshman Brittany Forrest (Lexington, NC). In the first half Forrest had a chip shot go off Pembroke’s left post. With time running down in the game, Forrest blasted another shot that Brave goalkeeper Kristen Parker stopped with a diving save.
Junior Hillary Helms (1-0) picked up the win in net for Pembroke making one save on two shots in the first half. Whitney Beverly and Parker combined effort in the second half preserved the shutout.
Freshman goalie Garrison Burton (Atlanta, GA) made 11 saves for the Knights.
St. Andrews next travels to CVAC rival Anderson on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
