Chowan spoils Knights season opener
August 27, 2005
LAURINBURG, NC—Freshman goalkeeper Garrison Burton (Atlanta, GA) made 10 saves in her first collegiate game for the Knights, but the visiting Chowan College women’s soccer team still managed a 2-0 victory over host St. Andrews in Saturday’s season opener for both squads.
Senior Lisa Knieriemen (Chester, VA) scored the eventual game-winning goal for the Lady Braves at the 33:31 mark of the first half. Stephanie Montague (Virginia Beach, VA) lofted an indirect kick to Knieriermen, who then converted on a shot just under the St. Andrews crossbar.
Sophomore Meredith Krause (Stafford, VA) provided an insurance goal for Chowan by punching in a loose rebound off the Knights goalkeeper in the 78th minute.
Burton (0-1) kept St. Andrews in the game making five saves in each half. The Knights best scoring change came in the middle of the second stanza, when freshman Brittany Forrest (Lexington, NC) rifled a long shot on goal that was stopped by Lady Braves’ goalie Emily Warthan (Colonial Heights, VA), who only needed the one save to preserve the shutout.
The Knights suit back up on September 6 when they entertain the USC Aiken Pacers at 2:00 p.m. Chowan visits Coker College on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
