Crusaders Top St. Andrews Women’s Soccer 3-2 in Last Minute

October 27, 2004

LAURINBURG, NC—Kaile Silva (Salt Lake City, UT) completed a hat trick with 23 seconds left in regulation lifting visiting Belmont Abbey to a 3-2 victory over St. Andrews in CVAC women’s soccer action on Wednesday.

The Crusaders, who improved to 9-9 overall and 9-0 in the CVAC, locked up the No. 1 seed in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Tournament while the Knights fell to 3-11-2 and 2-6-1.

Crystal Olu-Taylor (Raleigh, NC) put the Knights on top in the second minute of the game. Olu-Taylor beat one defender and then stuffed the ball in the back of the Crusaders net for her team leading ninth goal of the season.

Silva tied the game up at 1-1 in the 38th minute after finding a loose ball in a clogged Knights box and tapping it in for the easy score. The game remained deadlocked at one apiece until Silva scored her second goal of the game on a Heather Henesey (Flagstaff, AZ) pass at the 78:07 mark. Kara White (New Tripoli, PA) converted on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute for the Knights to tie the game up a 2-2.

In the last minute Lindsay Megill (Huntington Beach, CA) volleyed a long pass from the midfield that found Silva for a breakaway. Silva made a quick move to beat the St. Andrews goalkeeper and then knocked in the game winner at the 89:37 mark. The hat trick gives Silva eight goals on the season.

St. Andrews must win their regular season finale against Limestone and have a little luck on their side in order to make the CVAC Tournament. The Knights visit the Saints on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. while Abbey tries to complete a perfect conference regular season when they host Coker at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Women’s Soccer Plays to Scoreless Tie With Lees-McRae

October 23, 2004

LAURINBURG, NC—Neither St. Andrews or Lees-McRae could find the back of the net in 110-minutes of women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon as the two teams played to a double-overtime 0-0 tie. The visiting Lady Bobcats remain one point ahead of the Knights in the CVAC standings with a 3-9-2 overall and 2-4-2 conference mark while SAPC holds a 3-10-2 and 2-5-1 mark.

Krissten Zimmerman led the Knights in shots with three while LMC’s Heather Klaus (London, Ontario, Canada) had four.

The Knights host CVAC rival Belmont Abbey on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. for their last regular season home game.

Knights Soccer Stings Lady Cobras With 2 Late Goals

October 19, 2004

LAURINBURG, NC—Crystal Olu-Taylor and Kara White scored 24 seconds apart in the 89th minute to lift St. Andrews over Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference foe Coker College, 4-2, on Tuesday afternoon. The Knights, who are undefeated in their last two, improved to 3-10-1 overall and 2-5 in the CVAC while the Lady Cobras fell to 1-10-2 and 1-7.

Freshman Myra Miller (Atlanta, GA) scored her first collegiate goal at the 8:27 mark to put St. Andrews up 1-0. Olu-Taylor (Raleigh, NC) passed the ball to Miller, who rifled the shot from outside the box and under the Coker crossbar. The Knights had several other chances in the first frame, producing 10 of their 19 shots in the first 45-minutes, but had to settle for the one-goal lead at halftime.

The Lady Cobras tied the game up when Jen Backensto (Trenton, SC) beat St. Andrews goalie Meredith Yager (Raleigh, NC) from 10-yards out at 63:26. Exactly four minutes later the Knights regained the lead when Krissten Zimmerman (Raleigh, NC) scored her third goal of the season. Sarah Caron (Columbia, SC) volleyed a beautiful corner kick to Megan Zarnowiec (Maitland, FL), who headed the ball over to Zimmerman for the easy score.

Coker responded in the 73rd minute tying the game up for the second time when Megan Shaver (Athens, TN) found the far left corner of the Knights net. The Cobras kept the pressure on producing seven of their nine shot in the second half but could score again.

With 1:33 left in the game, Olu-Taylor put the Knights on top for good scoring her team-leading eighth goal and second game-winner of the season. White (New Tripoli, PA) insured the win for St. Andrews scoring at 88:51. Tenille Inman (Emporia, KS) played a big roll down the stretch for the Knights, assisting on both late goals. Yager picked up her third win in goal with three saves while Jacque Stewart (Cummings, GA) had seven stops for the Cobras.

First-year SAPC head coach Elizabeth Hernandez was relieved after the very emotional game saying, “this game was huge because if we did not win we probably would not make it to the playoffs. This game was just like the Queens game; we would take the lead but then get scored on. The game kept going back and forth, but we never gave up. They (St. Andrews) stuck to the game plan and the way they were coached and got the win. Having four different goal scorers’ shows this was a total team effort. After playing in several overtime games we made up our minds at halftime to have no more overtimes and the ladies came through.”

The Knights look to stay on track as they host CVAC rival Lees-McRae on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Olu-Taylor scored by sliding the ball past Converse goalie Katie Heos and sneaking it inside the far post.

Even with St. Andrews strong play, the All Stars never quit and they were able to tie the game up with less than 10 minutes left in regulation. Tracy Archenhold scored the unassisted Converse goal. The Knights had chances in both overtimes but had to settle for the tie.

THOMASVILLE, NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s soccer team was picked eighth in the 2004 CVAC Pre-season Poll, as voted upon by the coaches. The Knights are picked in the same eighth-place position that they finished the regular season last year. The ranking is two spots better than they were picked in 2003. First year head coach Elizabeth Hernandez will take over a program that has increased its win total in each of their last three years. Hernandez worked as the assistant coach for the team for the past four years. Hernandez looks to surprise some teams this year with a very young and deep roster that includes 10 returning starters, seven freshmen, one transfer and a red shirt for last year. The 2003 squad finished 5-13-2 overall and 3-5-2 in CVAC play, which qualified the team for their first postseason tournament.

Belmont Abbey women’s soccer coach Scot Wieland has five starters returning from the 2003 team that finished the season 15-7 and dominated the CVAC, going unbeaten in the regular season (10-0) and defeating Coker 2-1 in the CVAC tournament final in double-overtime. Having only lost two seniors to graduation, the Lady Royals will return nine starters and fifteen players while bringing in six talented and experienced freshmen for the upcoming season.

The Barton College women’s soccer team returns nine lettermen, including seven starters, from a young team that surged to a third-place CVAC finish (6-3-1) last season and finished 8-9-1 overall in order to claim a tie for third place positioning in the coaches preseason poll. Barton, under the direction of second-year head coach Stacey Tant, has added five talented freshmen and one transfer to its lineup.

Also tying for third place in the preseason poll is Lees-McRae College. The Bobcats return a solid squad from last year’s campaign. They will be led by junior goalie Anita Hekman, and senior defender Amanda Caron. In the midfield the Bobcats anchors are sophomores Heather Klause (a Second Team All-CVAC member in 2003), and Danielle Glenn. Lees-McRae will look to improve on their 11-6-3 overall and 7-1-2 conference record from 2003 (2nd Place CVAC finish).

Hernandez and Bowden New Soccer Coaches

February 17, 2004

LAURINBURG, NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College athletic department was pleased to announce Tuesday that Stevan Hernandez will take over the men’s soccer program and Elizabeth Bowden will be promoted to head coach of the women’s soccer program.

Hernandez will shift from the women’s team to the men’s team and will be helped two-year assistant coach Geoff Krampe. Stevan was the head coach of the women’s soccer program for five years and is in the midst of his fifth season as head softball coach. Elizabeth Bowden, who was the assistant women’s soccer coach for four years, will take over the women’s soccer program.

Both coaches will begin their new duties immediately. Stevan remains coaching softball and Elizabeth will maintain her positions as assistant athletic director for administration and compliance officer.

In his tenure at St. Andrews, Hernandez was responsible for re-instating the women’s soccer program in the fall of 1999. Since then Stevan has improved the team each year as they qualified for the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Tournament for the first time in 2003. Hernandez has also had success coaching softball leading the Knights to a fourth place finish in the standings last year, the program’s highest regular-season ranking since the mid-90’s.

Hernandez will take over a very young and talented team that will be very competitive in the future. Last years team featured 13 freshmen. The Knights only lost three seniors after the 2003 season that went 7-12-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the CVAC and earned the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament.

Hernandez, an Upper Saddle River, New Jersey native, had a solid playing career in which he captained the Bergen Community College men’s soccer team from 1991-1992. Hernandez also holds a National Diploma from the NSCAA.

Bowden’s main goal will to be to continue the improvement of a young women’s program that went 5-13-2 overall, 3-5-2 in the CVAC, and were the No. 8 seed in the conference tournament last year.

Bowden, an Atlanta, Georgia native, had a successful playing career before coming to St. Andrews. Elizabeth was a four-year starter for Belmont Abbey College, where she was instrumental on a team that advanced to the NCAA National Tournament Quarterfinals in 1998 and 1999 while also claiming two CVAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships. Bowden served as the Crusaders team captain during her senior year.

A 2000 graduate of Belmont Abbey, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English. In the summer of 2003, Bowden completed a Master of Arts degree in English Education from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Elizabeth also holds her NSCAA Level 1 Goalkeeping License as well as her National Diploma from the NSCAA.

Athletic Director Carl Ullrich was pleased to make these announcements stating, “After Tom Frambach left for Division I North Carolina State, we had a national search for his successor and Stevan rose to the top of the list. The decision was made easier knowing that we had someone capable in taking over the women’s program with Elizabeth.”

Ullrich added, “I truly believe our two soccer programs will thrive under the leadership of these two selfless, capable and inspiring young coaches.”

It should be a fun and exciting time for these programs and the fans of Knights athletics.
