Lady Crusaders Eliminate Knights From CVAC Tourney

November 4, 2003

Belmont, NC—The Belmont Abbey women’s soccer team did what they needed to advance to the CVAC semifinals, scoring once in each half and defeating Saint Andrews Presbyterian College 2-0 in the CVAC quarterfinals at Belmont Tuesday.

For the early part of the first half, both teams played defensively, with neither team recording a shot in the first 15 minutes. The Crusaders scored the all-important first goal in the 23rd minute when Stephanie Garcia outran a Saint Andrews defender for the ball and beat Knights goalie Meredith Yager for an unassisted goal. Although the Crusaders out shot St. Andrews 8-2 in the first half, the lead was only 1-0 at the midway mark.

In the second half Belmont Abbey had a chance early, but they misfired on a penalty kick and the lead stayed 1-0. Saint Andrews began to control more of the play at midfield, but was unable to get past Belmont Abbey’s defense to gain scoring opportunities.

With just over seven minutes remaining in the second half, Belmont Abbey added some insurance on a left-footed shot from Naomi Hernandez that beat an outstretched Yager for a 2-0 lead that would hold up.

With the win, Belmont Abbey improved to 13-7 on the season, and will play in the CVAC semifinals Friday at 11:30 a.m. against the winner of the Pfeiffer/Queens game. S

St. Andrews, which qualified for the CVAC tournament for the first time since the program was reinstated in 1999, ends their season at 5-13-2. The Knights, who improved their record by four wins from last year and reached the playoffs, will try to build on those positives going into the 2004 season.

Megan Zarnowiec Named CVAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week

November 4, 2003

THOMASVILLE, NC—Megan Zarnowiec of St. Andrews Presbyterian College (5-12-2 overall, 3-5-2 CVAC) has been selected as the NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC) women’s soccer Player of the Week. Megan Zarnowiec stepped up in the clutch for the Knights with three goals and one assist in two big CVAC games. The Knights knew they needed to win both games this week to make the playoffs and Zarnowiec provided the big plays. Megan scored the first two goals in a 5-1 route of Mt. Olive on Tuesday to set up a must win game on Saturday against Limestone. The junior forward from Maitland, Florida was involved in both Knights goals including assisting on the game winner and tacking on an insurance goal late in the game. Megan’s help in the 2-0 victory and leading the team to a 3-0-1 record in their last four CVAC games has provided the Knights with their first postseason appearance since the program was restarted in 1998.

Knights Defeat Saints and Make Playoffs

November 1, 2003

LAURINBURG, NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s soccer team won a 2-0 must have game against Limestone to qualify for the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights dominated play for most of the game but had trouble finishing off the attempts early including a missed penalty kick. St. Andrews recorded 27 shots to the Saints two.

Crystal Olu-Taylor put the Knights on the board in the 28th minute with her team leading seventh goal of the season. Megan Zarnowiec assisted on the goal. The score remained 1-0 until Zarnowiec scored her third goal in two games in the 78th minute.

The Knights held onto the 2-0 lead with Meredith Yager tallying her second career shutout in goal.

With the win and three points the Knights jumped over Anderson for the No. 8 seed in the women’s CVAC soccer tournament. Anderson lost to Queens 3-1 on Saturday to qualify the Knights for their first conference playoff game since the women’s soccer rebirth at St. Andrews under head coach Stevan Hernandez. Hernandez started in 1998 to rebuild a new soccer program that began play in ’99.

The coaching staff, players, and fans showed their happiness and excitement after all the teams hard work that including going a flawless 3-0-1 in their last four CVAC games when they looked to be out of the playoff picture by most.

The Knights improved to 5-12-2 overall and 3-5-2 in the CVAC while the Saints fell to 4-14 and 2-8.

The Knights will face No. 1 seed Belmont Abbey in the first round of the CVAC tournament on Tuesday afternoon. Game time has yet to be determined.

“The team played their best down the stretch and I’m very happy for the ladies as we make our first conference tournament. It was nice to see us play so well and have things fall into place as our girls deserved this after all their hard work and determination”, stated Hernandez.

Women’s Soccer Wins Second Straight

October 18, 2003

The win was the second straight for the Knights as they improve to 3-11-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference while the Lady Trojans fall to 7-7-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the CVAC.

The lone goal came in the 32nd minute when McAuliffe ripped a curling corner-kick that AC defender Ada Ezeokoli could not clear and ended up in the Lady Trojans net.

St. Andrews out shot Anderson, 18-13. The Knights goaltender Meredith Yager needed only five saves for her first collegiate shutout. Amy Davidson made six saves for the Lady Trojans.

Inman Scores Game Winner in 2nd OT For The Knights

October 16, 2003

LAURINBURG, NC—St. Andrews’ Tenille Inman headed in a Megan Zarnowiec crossing pass at the 102:58 mark to defeat Converse College, 3-2, in double-overtime on Thursday afternoon.

The Knights jumped on the board early as Zarnowiec connected a long pass to Crystal Olu-Taylor in the 7th minute of the game. Olu-Taylor took the Zarnowiec pass and dribbled the ball around the All Stars goalie, Jessica Simmons, and knocked in the goal. St. Andrews remained in control holding onto the 1-0 lead through halftime.

After some fancy footwork, Olu-Taylor ripped her second goal 2:29 into the second half giving the Knights a 2-0 lead. Olu-Taylor leads SAPC with five goals on the season.

The Knights remained in control out shooting the All Stars, 30-9, but were being plagued by a lot of penalties (23). The fouls caught up to St. Andrews as Allison Dalbec scored twice on direct kicks. Dalbec’s first kick came in the 70th minute. Dalbec converted on her second direct kick 38 seconds later, floating both shots just under the crossbar.

After giving up the two quick goals head coach Stevan Hernandez felt the Knights tightened up and did not cause as many fouls, which did not allow Converse the chance to get any other good scoring opportunities. The score remained deadlocked at 2-2 until Inman scored the game-winner in the second overtime.

Hernandez went on to say, “the team played a solid game overall, both defensively and offensively. The good decision making lead to us dictating the pace and play of most of the game. The defense also couldn’t have played better.”

The Knights improve to 2-11-1 on the season while the All Stars fall to 6-9.

“We presented ourselves with better scoring opportunities, but will need to get off better shots to prepare for the Trojans,” stated Hernandez as the Knights hope to get a winning streak going against Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference foe Anderson on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Late Goal by Coker Finishes Off The Knights

Freshman Cara Durrance gave the Cobras the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute on a free kick from the left of the box.
