In their own words...
"As a first generation Latin American, it was different coming here, but I soon realized that I could just be me. St. Andrews is a school for people who like small classes and a close community."

January 23, 2012
By: Philip Ratchford, Sports Information

Rome, GA- The Knights set off for Georgia on Friday afternoon to prepare for an early morning dual meet at Shorter University on Saturday, January 21. SAU wrestling put up a strong fight, battling to a tied score of 12-12 after the first five weight classes. However, the Knights could not pull out enough points to claim the match and ended the day with a 33-17 loss, taking St. Andrews wrestling to a 3-5 dual record.

Denny Vaughan (Dinwiddie, VA) hit the mat first for St. Andrews, as the heavyweights battled at the beginning of the meet on Saturday. Vaughan dropped a close 5-3 decision to Chris Rowland. Senior Eric Brown (Norfolk, VA; 125 lbs.) claimed the Knights’ only pin this weekend; taking down Jonathan Rodriguez at 5:13. Shorter did not send anyone in for the 133 lb. class, giving Chauncey Foster (Hampton, VA) a win by forfeit.

Sterling Perry (Hampton, VA) fell by an 8-2 decision in the 141 lb. class, followed by Nick Sauceda (Virginia Beach, VA) who battled Robbie Collum at 149 lbs. Sauceda could not escape Collum and found himself pinned after 5:03 minutes. Freshman Kody Getkin (Danville, PA; 157 lbs.) dropped a major decision to Dalton Lane of Shorter University, putting Shorter back in the lead for the first time since the second class.

Luke Gregory (Greensboro, NC) got into a tough situation in the 165 lb. grouping and fell by a quick pin at the 1:05 minute mark. Steffan Baker (Poquoson, VA) showed the Hawks what St. Andrews wrestling is capable of by leaving the mat with a tech. fall victory (15-0) over his 174 lb. competitor. At 184 lbs., Caleb Mitcler (Green Mountain, NC) went up against Joe Hinchman and also fell by a quick pin after 1:27 minutes in the circle. SAU switched things up in the 197 lb. class this weekend, sending in Pittsboro, NC, native Trent Harris. Harris faced a tough Shorter University contender and fell by tech. fall, concluding the match.

The Knights will travel to UNC Pembroke on Wednesday, January 25 for a dual meet that was rescheduled after a conflict arose early in January. The Braves will host St. Andrews at 7:00 PM on Wednesday.
