King Tornado Blows by Knights Wrestling

January 18, 2012
By: Philip Ratchford, Sports Information

Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews grapplers hosted the King College (TN) Tornado tonight for the second home wrestling event of the week at SAU. The Tornado proved to be too much for the Knights to handle as freshman Denny Vaughan (Dinwiddie, VA) was the only victor for the Royal Blue and White; leaving St. Andrews with a 40-3 loss to Conference Carolinas member institution King College (TN).

The Knights could not get a handle on the Tornado this evening as the crowd saw regional powerhouse King College (TN) demonstrate their skills on the mat, almost leaving the Knights scoreless. Two Knights fell by decisions this evening; Chauncey Foster (Hampton, VA; 133 lbs.) and Kody Getkin (Danville, PA; 157 lbs.) tried their best but could not overcome their competitors, Cullen King (133 lbs.) and Jeremy Miller (157 lbs.).

Eric Brown (Norfolk, VA) went in for SAU at 125 lbs. against Jerelle McCabe, while fellow Knights Sterling Perry (Hampton, VA; 141 lbs.) and Greg Pattis (Pinehurst, NC; 197 lbs.) faced-off against Blake Bowman at 141 lbs. and Frank Morgan at 197 lbs. Brown, Perry, and Pattis battled through their matches, yet found themselves too far behind their opponents to pull out a win; each finishing their duel with a loss by major decision.

A couple of the members of King’s squad pulled down tech fall victories tonight as well, adding to their lead over St. Andrews. Nick Sauceda (Virginia Beach, VA; 149 lbs.) was unable to slow down King’s Nic Stella, while Trent Harris (Pittsboro, NC) found himself powerless against Dyvon Passmore; giving both Knights a TF loss. Luke Gregory (Greensboro, NC) and Joshua Price (Fayetteville, NC) each found themselves pinned by a member of the Tornado gang, Patrick Spano and Brandon Tressler.

SAU freshman Denny Vaughan gave the Knights their only win of the night by earning two points at the final buzzer against Dondricus Anderson; taking a 14-12 decision victory.

St. Andrews wrestling will travel to Shorter University on Saturday, January 21, to hit the mats once again at 10:00 AM.
