"As a first generation Latin American, it was different coming here, but I soon realized that I could just be me. St. Andrews is a school for people who like small classes and a close community."

Laurinburg, NC- Harris Court saw yet another exciting night of St. Andrews wrestling as SAU hosted the Pioneers of Spartanburg Methodist College. The Knights battled the Pioneers until the end, entering the final duel with a score of 24-24, leaving it up to the heavyweights to decide the outcome. Freshman Denny Vaughan (Dinwiddie, VA) fought for a win at the 285 lb. mark, naming the Knights the victors, 28-23.

Starting things off for the Knights, Eric Brown (Norfolk, VA; 125 lbs.) took Yaro Radtsivich to the mat. After 3:32 minutes, Brown flipped Radtsivich’s shoulders to the mat and gave the Knights their first pin of the meet. SAU sophomore Chauncey Foster (Hampton, VA) went up against Randy Stevens for the 133 lb. duel at Harris Court. Stevens worked hard for the Pioneers and battled Foster until the third period, during which he forced Foster into a pin at 6:36.

SAU new-comer Nick Sauceda (Virginia Beach, VA) fought hard for the Royal Blue and White at 149 lbs. SMC sophomore Dallas Phillips wouldn’t surrender to Sauceda, but found himself unable to escape Sauceda’s grip as the Knights put another pin in the books at the buzzer of the second period (4:59). Kody Getkin (Danville, PA) and Kenan Jackson faced off in the 157 class. Fighting through three periods, Getkin could not overcome Jackson’s power and fell by pin at 5:41.

SAU freshman Luke Gregory (Greensboro, NC) went up against Trent Williams in the 165 lb. class. Gregory worked until the end, but could not get away from Williams and fell by a 15-13 decision to the SMC grappler. Joshua Price (Fayetteville, NC) gave it all he could against Mateo Rojas, but could not pull out a win as he also fell by decision, 9-4.

SAU freshman Denny Vaughan and SMC’s Donnee Grace met in the circle as tonight’s heavyweights.
