Knights Pinned by Saints Wrestling, 34-13

Laurinburg, NC- The Knights of St. Andrews wrestling hosted Conference Carolinas member Limestone College for the 2011-12 home wrestling opener this evening at Harris Court. After 90 minutes of intense matches, the Saints came out victorious with a final score of 34-13; taking the Knights to 1-1 overall.

In the 125 lb. weight class, Eric Brown (Norfolk, VA) battled for the first win of the evening for SAU. Holding his opponent for the last eight seconds of his match, Brown gained an extra point and won by a 6-4 decision over Eric Rholetter. Freshman Matt Craven (Southport, NC) went in for St. Andrews at the 133 mark and left the mat with a major decision loss to Michael Hellman, 1-14.

Sterling Perry (Hampton, VA) wrestled at 141 lbs. for SAU and could not escape Kenneth Campnich’s grip as Campnich pinned Perry at 1:21. Kody Getkin (Danville, PA) fought Shawn Landgraff until the end, but was unable to hold Landgraff down as he earned two points to leave Getkin with a 3-5 loss in the 149 lb. class.

Sophomore Caleb Mitcler (Green Mountain, NC) faced off against Jeremy McPhearson at 157 lbs. After a quick duel, Mitcler fell to McPhearson after being pinned at 1:50. Giving the crowd a fantastic showing, Steffan Baker (Poquoson, VA) took down Max Redfoot by a major decision of 11-1 at the 165 lb. mark. In yet another long duel for the Knights, Richard Manwarren (Middleburg, FL) and Bryce Sopko grappled at 174 until Sopko came out with a decision of 8-3 in favor of the Saints.

Making it to the second period, Trent Harris (Pittsboro, NC) gave a great effort against Nick Shappee as the 184 lb. competitors went head to head this evening. Harris found himself overpowered by Shappee and fell by pin at 3:41. Pinehurst, NC, native Greg Pattis battled through two overtime periods at the 197 lb. class before falling into a pin by Landon Hall at 8:59.

In the heavyweight division, Denzel Vaughan (Dinwiddie, VA) pushed David Lopez to the max and came out with a pin at 6:40, grabbing the third victory for the Knights in this evening’s matchup.

The Knights will head to UNC Pembroke on January 10, 2012 to take on the Braves at 7:00 PM.

174- Bryce Sopko (LC) defeated Richard Manwarren (SAU) by DEC, 8-3

184- Nick Shappee (LC) defeated Trent Harris (SAU) by PIN, 3:41

197- Landon Hall (LC) defeated Greg Pattis (SAU) by PIN, OT2 8:59

285- Denzel Vaughan (SAU) defeated David Lopez (LC) by PIN, 6:40
