Davidson, NC- St. Andrews wrestling hit the mats once again as they participated in the Davidson Open on Saturday, December 3. Eric Brown (Norfolk, VA) advanced through the 125 lb. weight class and finished the event at 4-2, the best record of the day for SAU.

Bringing home the most wins for SAU, Brown defeated wrestlers from Gardener Webb, Liberty, and the Citadel. Wrestling at the 133 mark, Matt Craven (Southport, NC) earned a 1-2 record as he won by a major decision over a UNCP competitor. Hampton, VA, native Sterling Perry defeated Limestone’s John Jackson III on his way to a 2-2 record in the 141 weight class.

Freshman Kody Getkin (Danville, PA) also earned an even record on Saturday. Representing SAU in the 149 lb. grouping, Getkin faced opponents from schools such as Duke and Appalachian State while he fought for a 2-2 finish. James Green (College Park, GA) and Caleb Mitcler (Green Mountain, NC) grappled for the Knights at the 157 lb. class. Green fell 0-2, while Mitcler claimed a 1-2 record after pinning Mitchell Kithcart from Cumberlands in 0:35 seconds.

Steffan Baker (Poquoson, VA), a sophomore at St. Andrews, pulled down the second best record for the Knights by going 3-2. Baker also faced some challenging competitors as he saw wrestlers from UNCP, Duke, the Citadel, and Virginia Military Institute in the 165 lb. class. Trent Harris (Pittsboro, NC) completed the Open with a 1-2 record after wresting at the 174 lb. mark. Harris also recorded a win by pinning his opponent, AJ Blosinski of Liberty University.

Greg Pattis (Pinehurst, NC) once again hit the mats for the Knights as a contender in the 197 lb. weight division. Pattis was unable to gain enough points to pull out a victory as he dropped two decisions on his way to an 0-2 finish.

In the heavyweight class, two freshmen suited up for St. Andrews. Daniel Iovino-Ortiz (Milford, CT) and Denzel Vaughan (Dinwiddie, VA) each tried to earn the Knights a victory but could not overtake their opponents and both finished the day with an 0-2 record.

The Knights will host Limestone College tomorrow, Tuesday, December 6, at 7:00 PM for the first home wrestling match of the 2011-12 season. Come out to Harris Court and cheer on your Knights grapplers as they vie for a victory in their second dual match of the season.
