Pembroke, NC- St. Andrews wrestling spent all day Saturday on the mats as they participated in the 31st Annual Pembroke Classic. The Knights fought hard against some of the top ranking schools in the region this weekend as they saw competitors from NC State, Newberry, Appalachian State, and event host UNC Pembroke. Leading SAU, freshman Denzel Vaughan (Dinwiddie, VA) wrestled his way to a 6th place finish in the heavyweight class.

At 125 lbs., Eric Brown (Norfolk, VA) and Chauncey Foster (Hampton, VA) went in for the Knights. Brown finished the day at 2-2, including a 1:29 minute pin to win his first match. Foster dropped two decisions to leave with a record of 0-2. Senior Casey Gashaw (Laurinburg, NC) wrestled in the 133 lb. spot for SAU and also came out 2-2 at the end of the event.

Three Knights competed in the 141 weight class, Sterling Perry (Hampton, VA), Matt Craven (Southport, NC), and Patrick Wells (Hope Mills, NC). Perry took three wins throughout the day for a 3-2 overall finish; earning all three of his wins off of pins. Craven and Wells each went 0-2 as they saw tough competition at the Pembroke Classic.

Kody Getkin (Danville, PA) tied with Perry for the most wins for St. Andrews at the event as he also went 3-2 on Saturday. Getkin was able to pin two of his opponents and also earned a team high of eight take downs. James Green (College Park, GA) and Caleb Mitcler (Green Mountain, NC) competed at the 157 slot. Green went 0-2, while Mitcler pulled one win in the class with a pin at 1:16 on his way to a 1-2 record.

Junior Richard Manwarren (Middleburg, FL) dropped his first two matches of the day to finish 0-2 at the 174 spot, while teammate Trent Harris (Pittsboro, NC) fell 0-2 in the 184 lb. weight class. Bringing home the only St. Andrews placement from the Pembroke Classic, Vaughan finished the day at an even 2-2 and pulled a pin on his opponent at the 6:37 mark during his first match en route to his 6th place finish in the heavyweight division.

The Knights have earned a well-deserved break, as they do not compete again until December. St. Andrews wrestling will appear at the Davidson Open at 9:00 AM on Saturday, December 3.
