Knights Wrestling Adds Eight Grapplers

Laurinburg, NC- Eight new wrestling recruits representing five states make up the 2011-2012 class for Coach Joe Baranik in the 6 th year as the head of the program. Coach Baranik started the wrestling program in 2006.

Matt Craven: This Southport, NC, native wrestled at South Brunswick High School, where he placed 3 rd in the NC State Wrestling Championships his senior year at 119 lbs. and accumulated an overall record of 46-5. Craven also was a three-time conference champion and placed 3 rd twice and 2 nd once in the East Regional Tournament. He completed his high school career with a new school record of 148-31. Craven was a member of the NC Dream Team. “I am excited that Craven has decided to wrestle for the Knights. He has an abundance of energy and is very coachable,” stated Baranik. Craven is planning on wrestling in the 125 lb. weight class.

Tyler Davis: Davis hit the mats for Lexington High School in Lexington, NC. Davis was a 3x Central Carolina Conference champion and a Regional champion his senior year at 103 lbs. He placed 6 th in the NC State Tournament his junior and senior years. Davis also lettered in soccer three seasons and in baseball for two seasons. His hobbies are fitness training and listening to music. Davis will red-shirt this season and wrestle open tournaments at 125 lbs.

Kody Getkin: Getkin hails from Danville, PA, and wrestled for the Danville High School ‘Ironmen’. Getkin was a two-time Sectional champion, placed 3 rd in the Regional Tournament, and 4 th in the District Four Tournament. His senior year, he qualified for the prestigious Pennsylvania State Tournament. Getkin, who was team captain his junior and senior years, finished his high school career with a 111-21 record. Getkin also earned four varsity letters in football and track and made the “Distinguished Honor Roll” his junior and senior years. Getkin plans to wrestle in the 149 lb. weight class for St. Andrews University.

Luke Gregory: Gregory comes to St. Andrews University from Grimsley High School in Greensboro, NC. As a three-sport athlete, Gregory lettered four years in football and wrestling and one year in golf. His junior year, he led the conference in sacks as a linebacker. On the mats, Gregory was a conference champ, 3 rd in the Regional Tournament, and an NC State Wrestling Championships qualifier. He finished his senior year at 36-4 with 28 pins!

Trent Harris: Harris made his way to St. Andrews from Northwood High School in Pittsboro, NC. He is projected to wrestle at 184 lbs. for the Knights. Harris was a three year starter as a light-heavyweight, who finished his senior year as a conference champion, 4 th in the Regional Tournament, and top 12 in the North Carolina State Tournament. He was 31-12 as a senior. Also, Harris was a two-year starter on the football team as a lineman and was selected as an All-Conference player. Baranik boasts that, “Trent comes to St. Andrews with loads of potential and a hard working spirit. He has a chance to wrestle varsity immediately.”

Dan Iovino-Ortiz: Out of Jonathan Law High School in Milford, CT, Iovino-Ortiz arrived at St. Andrews with a 36-6 record from his senior year and was ranked in the top 20. He placed 4 th in the Southern Connecticut Conference, attended numerous wrestling camps, and was a member of the Tugman Wrestling Club travel team. “Danny has a great attitude and is an extremely hard worker. I expect him to do great things here in the next four years,” says Baranik. He is projected to wrestle in the 285 lb. weight class.

Mykwan Roebuck: Roebuck was a two year starter for Groves High School in Savannah, GA, before coming to St. Andrews. He was a Sectional, Regional champion and a state runner-up in Georgia. In addition, he placed 4 th in Sections and 3 rd in Regions as well as placing 5 th in the state. Roebuck was a state runner-up in Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. He also has four varsity letters in track and three in football. During his time on the football field, Roebuck was selected as an All-State cornerback. Finally, Roebuck was a member of the FBLA for two years.

Denzel Vaughan: Vaughan hails from Dinwiddie High School in Dinwiddie, VA, where he wrestled four years on the varsity team at either the 215 lb. weight class or 285 lb. class. Vaughan was District champion, a two-time Regional champion, and 5 th in the Virginia State Wrestling Tournament his senior year at the 215 lb. weight class. His career record was 107-20 with 85 pins! Vaughan was a team captain for both the wrestling and football teams. He was a varsity lineman for the football team for four years, for which he was honored as an All-District, All-Region, and All-State player his senior year. Vaughan was also involved in the theatre production program and hopes to be the next wrestling/actor, like Ashton Kutcher.
