Newport News, VA-Junior Matt Fletcher (141), sophomore Richard Manwarren (165) and senior heavyweight Justin Hoover all went 3-0 on Saturday as the St. Andrews wrestling team finished up the regular season by winning 2 of 3 matches at the Newport News Apprentice School quad meet in Newport News, VA.

Hoover won his tenth straight match to run his record to 18-11 on the year. The winning streak is a new record at St. Andrews.

St. Andrews first wrestled the Builders of the host Apprentice School, a rematch of the VA Duals matchup back in January where the Knights logged their first win of the season. However, in this match, the Knights were outwrestled from the start in losing 36-11.

The three undefeated wrestlers mentioned above were the only men to win their individual matches. However, some close matches included junior Eric Brown (125) losing a tough 7-6 decision and junior Greg Pattis (184) getting reversed and pinned after leading in his match 2-1.

St. Andrews next wrestled the Pirates of Hampton University and took out their frustrations from their previous match to crush HU 44-6.

The highlights of the match include sophomore Patrick Wells (133) getting his first dual meet win of the season winning by tech fall 17-1, Fletcher pulling out a close 3-2 decision at 141, and senior Troy Baranik attaining his first pin of the season with a second period fall at 157. Manwarren also bumped up to 184 to wrestle his match and threw his opponent to his back to win by pin and Hoover ended it with a quick pin at heavyweight.

St. Andrews (5-14) then concluded the regular season, with a dominating dual meet win against William & Mary College. The Knights manhandled the Tribe to win 54-5.

Every Knight wrestler won by either pin or forfeit in this match except Baranik at 157 who lost to one of the Tribe’s two standout wrestlers by technical fall after being in on several takedown attempts but would not get the call. Freshman Caleb Mitcler also achieved his first win of the season winning by a defensive pin at 149. Mitcler also had an exhibition match before the dual meet and he won that by pin as well.

“It was great to finish the season on a winning note by defeating our last two opponents. Now it is time to focus on the regional tournament where we hope to qualify a few guys for the NCAA tournament in Nebraska,” stated Coach Joe Baranik.

The Knights return to action this Friday and Saturday as they travel to Findlay, OH for the Super Region 2 NCAA national qualifier tournament. Any wrestler that places in the top four at the region tournament will advance to D-2 nationals in Kearney, NE. Action begins at 10 am Fri and Sat morning.
