LEBANON, Tenn.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College wrestling team make the long trek west to Tennessee and earned the maximum six points in four different matches en route to a 28-24 victory over Cumberland University on Friday night.
Freshman Casey Gashaw (Laurinburg, N.C.) led the Knights to their third dual match victory of the season with a major decision win. St. Andrews (3-9) will next compete in the EDSOUTH Tournament hosted by Carson-Newman College tomorrow in Jefferson City, Tenn.
Gashaw earned his eighth victory of the season and third dual match win with a 17-6 major decision at 133-pounds.
Freshmen lightweight Eric Brown (Norfolk, Va.) and Andrew Roberto (Holly Ridge, N.C.) each picked up six points for the Knights with forfeit wins. Brown increased his team-high victory mark to 17 total wins while Roberto’s win is the first ‘W’ credited to his collegiate record.
Second year head coach Joe Baranik saved St. Andrews several points by making some key lineup changes during the match. Coach Baranik first moved his son, freshman Troy Baranik (Laurinburg, N.C.), up a weight to 149-pounds. T. Baranik was defeated by an 8-2 decision but saved SAPC three points by avoiding the pin fall against a heavier wrestler.
With the Knights clinging to a slim 10-8 lead after four matches, Coach Baranik once again made another smart decision. The Bulldogs weighted in a grappler for both 157 and 165 pounds, but Baranik knowing he had to forfeit one of those weights decided to give the hosts the six points at 157 thinking they were weighting in an injured wrestler at 165 just to steal points. However, Baranik bumped up Roberto -- who just joined the team in January as a walk-on after participating with the soccer team in the fall -- and sure enough SAPC got those six points back when Cumberland forfeited.
The Knights then secured the victory with six-point wins in the next two matches. Sophomore 174-lb Will Harcum (Williamsburg, Va.) was leading 3-2 when the Bulldog wrestler had to default due to injury. In the next match, freshman 184-lb Eric Fulmer (Glenshaw, Pa.) collected six more points after the Cumberland grappler was disqualified for an illegal slam with the match tied at 3-3.
Fulmer and Brown are tied for the team-lead with seven dual match victories apiece. Harcum now has three wins on the season.
Gashaw, Fulmer, and senior 197-lb Charles Richardson (Virginia Beach, Va.) all had takedowns for St. Andrews.
