LAURINBURG, N.C.—Sophomore Will Harcum (Williamsburg, Va.) recorded the only victory for host St. Andrews Presbyterian College with a 18-8 major decision as visiting Spartanburg Methodist College prevailed 49-4 on Friday night in Harris Court.
The Knights (2-7) had their home finale spoiled while the Pioneers (1-5) collected their first dual match victory of the season.
In the first match of the evening, St. Andrews lightweight freshman Eric Brown (Norfolk, Va.) lost a close 4-2 decision. The match was tied 2-2 late but Brown was called for an illegal hold that gave his opponent a penalty point and an escape point for the victory.
Spartanburg Methodist built its lead up to 9-0 in the next match as an accident elbow to the ribs stunned freshman Casey Gashaw (Laurinburg, N.C.), allowed his opponent to pin him at the 2:10 mark of the first period.
The Pioneers continued to build their lead up to 25-0 at the halftime intermission with three more wins. Freshman Troy Baranik (Laurinburg, N.C.) had a pair of reversals in his 141-pound match but still lost by major decision, 17-8. SMC earned a forfeit win at 149, before the Pioneers posted their second pin fall of the match in the 157-lb battle. Freshman Andrew Roberto (Holly Ridge, N.C.) was downed 44 seconds into his second collegiate match after joining the team this week.
Spartanburg Methodist came out of the 10-minute break with another pin fall in the 165-pound ranks. Senior Brian Roznowski (Yorktown, Va.) was defeated two minutes and five seconds into the contest.
The Knights finally got on the board in the seventh match of the night when Harcum posted his major decision. Harcum earned his first dual match victory of the season with three takedowns, two reversals, and a pair of near falls.
SMC earned 12 more points as SAPC was forced to forfeit the next two weight classes (184 and 197). The Pioneers final margin of victory grew to 45 points as they registered their fourth first-period pin fall of the night. Freshman Andre Ellerbe (Laurinburg, N.C.) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with an early takedown but later in the period was taken down and pinned at the 2:34 mark.
St. Andrews will next compete in the East Coast Duals hosted by UNC Pembroke next weekend. The Knights are scheduled to battle West Liberty State College on Friday at 8:00 p.m. and Kutztown University on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
