HAMPTON, Va.—Three of the six St. Andrews Presbyterian College wrestlers that took the mat in their final match of the 2008 Virginia Duals won, but a quartet of forfeits allowed McDaniel College to take the dual match 34-10 on Friday afternoon in the Hampton Coliseum.
The Knights (2-5) picked up wins by a trio of freshmen including a major decision by Eric Fulmer (Glenshaw, Pa.). Troy Baranik (Laurinburg, N.C.) registered his first collegiate victory for SAPC while Eric Brown (Norfolk, Va.) improved to 3-0 at the Virginia Duals.
Brown started the match with a 13-8 decision at the lightweight ranks to give the Knights an early 3-0 lead. Brown leads St. Andrews with 15 wins on the season.
Baranik then tied the match at 6-6 with his first collegiate win, a 13-9 decision at 141-pounds.
The Green Terror then tripled up the Knights score, 18-6, but receiving two forfeit wins.
Fulmer then pulled St. Andrews back within striking distance at 18-10 with his 8-0 major decision. Fulmer’s shutout in the 174-lb bout improved is record to 6-4 on the season. Fulmer and Brown lead the Knights with identical 5-2 ledgers in dual matches.
McDaniel’s lead became insurmountable heading into the final two weights after picking up six more points with a forfeit win at 184-pounds. A major decision and a pin by the last two Green Terror grapplers increased the final margin of victory to 24.
St. Andrews visits local rival UNC Pembroke on Thursday before hosting its last home match of the season on Friday, January 18 against Spartanburg Methodist College. Both dual matches are slated to start at 7:00 p.m.
