Knights grapplers drop two at Virginia Duals

January 11, 2008

HAMPTON, Va.—Freshman lightweight Eric Brown (Norfolk, Va.) won both of his matches but the St. Andrews Presbyterian College wrestling team lost both of their dual matches in the 2008 Virginia Duals Tournament at the Hampton Coliseum (hosted by the Peninsula Wrestling Association) on Friday.

The Knights opened up the tournament against No. 3 seed SUNY-Brockport and started out great picking up the first three points of the match with a win by Brown but the Golden Eagles (1-0) would go on to win the final nine weight classes en route to a 44-3 victory.

SAPC had to forfeit four weight classes giving SUNY-Brockport a 24-point cushion. Brown pulled out a close 6-5 decision to earn the Knights only points. Freshman Eric Fulmer (Glenshaw, Pa.) was close to giving St. Andrews another victory but dropped a narrow 6-4 decision at 174-pounds.

In the consolation bracket, St. Andrews met up with NCAA Division I Wagner College and hung tough but eventually lost 38-13. The Seahawks only out scored the Knights 14-13 in the six matches that went to the mat but built their final margin of victory to 25 thanks to four more forfeits by SAPC.

Sophomore Brad McKee highlighted the Knights battle with Wagner by recording his first collegiate pin fall. McKee earned St. Andrews six points with his 2:50 pin in the 133-pound bout.

Brown registered his second straight decision with a 9-2 victory in the lightweight ranks. Brown has a team-high 14 wins on the season.

Fulmer bounced back from his close loss in his first match of the day with a 13-0 major decision. Fulmer’s shutout at 174-lbs was his fourth dual match victory in six tries.

Freshman heavyweight Andre Ellerbe (Laurinburg, N.C.) lost a tight 4-1 decision in his final match. Ellerbe, freshman 141-lb Troy Baranik (Laurinburg, N.C.) and senior 197-lb Charles Richardson (Virginia Beach, Va.) lost their matches against both SUNY-Brockport and Wagner.
