Gashaw wins in Knights loss to No. 10 Newberry

January 9, 2008

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Freshman Casey Gashaw (Laurinburg, N.C.) recorded St. Andrews Presbyterian College’s only victory of the night as visiting No. 10 nationally ranked Newberry College rolled to the 46-4 East Region victory on Wednesday night in Harris Court.

The Indians, also ranked No. 2 in the East Region, improved to 6-5 on the season while the Knights had their two match winning streak snapped falling to 2-3.

Newberry earned 24 of its points on four forfeits by the Knights. The Indians earned six points in three consecutive weight classes included forfeit victories by freshman 149-lb Jesse Miller (Lilburn, Ga.), freshman 157-lb Christian Johnson (Summerville, S.C.), and senior 165-lb Alonso Azumendi (Wellford, S.C.). Also, credited with a forfeit win was freshman 184-lb Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.).

Wednesday’s match started at the 184-pounds ranks where Azumendi earned six-points for the visitors. In the bout where the grapplers actually took the mat, Newberry got an impressive pin by freshman Mike Peterson (Fayetteville, N.C.) in the 197-pound battle. Peterson pinned Knights’ senior Charles Richardson (Virginia Beach, Va.) in just 27 seconds.

Freshman heavyweight Alonzo Henry (Marietta, Ga.) extended Newberry’s lead to 15-0 in the next match edging SAPC freshman Andre Ellerbe (Laurinburg, N.C.) with a 5-2 decision. Henry received four of his five points on delay penalties while also scoring an escape.

The Indians earned their second straight decision as freshman Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) rallied past Knights freshman Eric Brown (Norfolk, Va.), 8-4. Brown held a 2-1 advantage after the first three minutes but a 6-2 second period by Oliver propelled him to the victory. Oliver is ranked No. 6 individually in the East Region.

Gashaw finally put the Knights on the board in the fifth bout of the evening registering a 16-4 major decision over freshman Devon Gillett (Jessup, Md.). Gashaw racked up the points early in the match including three-point near falls in both the first and second periods. Gashaw now has seven wins on the season while also evening his dual match record to 2-2 in his freshman campaign.

Newberry bounced back after the midway intermission with its own 16-5 major decision in the next match provided by junior Andrew Young (Summerville, S.C.). Young built his big lead on seven takedowns against Knights freshman Troy Baranik (Laurinburg, N.C.), who was wrestling in his first ever collegiate dual match.

After the three consecutive forfeits, Newberry finished the night with six more points on an injury default in the 174-pound match. Freshman Bryant Blanton (Summerville, S.C.) was credited with the win at the 3:52 mark when freshman Eric Fulmer (Glenshaw, Pa.) had to stop after he had already used up his injury timeouts. Blanton, ranked No. 3 in the East Region, was leading the match 2-0 with a takedown at the time of the default.

Both St. Andrews and Newberry will next compete in the 2008 Virginia Duals on Friday and Saturday, January 11-12 in Hampton, Va. (hosted by the Peninsula Wrestling Association). The Knights first round dual match will be against No. 3 seed SUNY Brockport on Friday at 11:00 a.m. while the No. 1 seed Indians hit the mats against McDaniel College on Friday at 9:00 a.m.
