Belmont Abbey grapplers double up St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Belmont Abbey College posted wins in the final seven matches to defeat host St. Andrews Presbyterian College 36-18 in an NCAA Division II wrestling dual meet in Harris Court on Wednesday night.
SAPC started the night with a 12-0 lead after the Abbey forfeited at both the lightweight and 133-pound division. Earning six points apiece for the Knights were sophomore Kyle Craver (Lexington, N.C.) and freshman Brad McKee (Kings Mountain, N.C.).
Freshman Bryan Seal (Orange County, Va.) extended the Knights lead to 18-0 with a pin fall at 141-pounds. Seal disposed of freshman Appolon Jean-Paul (Deltona, Fla.) as time expired in the second round getting the pin at the 5:00 minute mark.
The Crusaders rallied back and tied the match at 18-18 over the next three stanzas. St. Andrews forfeited the 149 and 157-pound classes. Picking up the forfeit wins were freshmen David Sledz (Woodbridge, Va.) and Justin Bates (Arden, N.C.). Senior Philip Bliss (Collier, W.Va.) deadlocked the match with a first-round pin fall at 165-lbs. Bliss tapped junior Brian Roznowski (Yorktown, Va.) 2:01 into the battle.
Freshman 174-pounder David Hoggard (Virginia Beach, Va.) gave the visitors the lead for good with a major decision over SAPC freshman Will Harcum (Williamsburg, Va.). Hoggard finished with the 13-2 win providing BAC with four team points.
Freshman Will Cruz (Manassas, Va.) doubled the Abbey’s lead to eight points, 26-18, with another major decision at 184-pounds. Riding time gave Cruz the extra point on freshman DJ Chverchko (Loretto, Pa.) to win 12-4.
The Crusaders got their second pin fall of the night at the 197-lb weight class. Sophomore Tim Stanton (Slidell, La.) pinned SAPC freshman Alex Mathews (LaGrange, Ga.) two minutes and 17 seconds into the first round.
Senior heavyweight AJ Scales (Mocksville, N.C.) capped the 18-point Belmont Abbey victory with a 14-5 major decision over Knights junior Charles Richardson (Virginia Beach, Va.).
St. Andrews will next compete in the NCAA Division II East Regional on Friday and Saturday, February 23-24. UNC-Pembroke will be hosting the two-day event in Pembroke, N.C.
