Cumberland edges St. Andrews wrestling

LAURINBURG, N.C.—The Cumberland University wrestling team won seven of 10 matches on Thursday night in Harris Court to defeat the first year St. Andrews Presbyterian College wrestling program 34-18 in a collegiate dual match.
141-pound sophomore Gabriel Ortiz (Baltimore, Md.), 149-pound freshman Bryan Seal (Orange County, Va.), and 174-pound freshman Will Harcum (Williamsburg, Va.) all picked up six points apiece for the Knights grapplers with forfeit victories at their respective weight classes.
Harcum extended his current win streak to three straight dual matches.
SAPC forfeited the 133-pound and 157-pound divisions giving Cumberland 12 points.
Bulldog sophomore Desean Willis (Lakewood, Wash.) opened up the wrestling with a major decision over sophomore Kyle Craver (Lexington, N.C.). Willis posted the 17-6 victory in the lightweight division to give the visitors four points. Craver had one takedown in the match to increase his team-high takedown total to 22.
The next two bouts saw Cumberland win a pair of close decisions. Freshman Kurt Hamilton (Decatur, Ala.) won at 165-lbs, defeating junior Brian Roznowski (Yorktown, Va.) 6-2. Classmate Kyle Studer (Sycamore, Ohio) followed at 184-pounds with a 6-1 decision over freshman DJ Chverchko (Loretto, Pa.).
In the final two matches the Bulldogs ended the night with two pin falls. 197-pound sophomore Luke Borneman (Carmel, N.Y.) pinned freshman Alex Mathews (LaGrange, Ga.) in 3:41. In the heavyweight finale, freshman Xavier Taylor (Swanton, Ohio) downed junior Charles Richardson (Virginia Beach, Va.) in 1:26 to give the visitors the 16-point victory.
St. Andrews will compete in the Newport News Open Tournament (hosted by Newport News Apprentice) on Saturday.
