Spartanburg Methodist 47, St. Andrews 4

SPARTANBURG, S.C.—Freshman Alex Mathews (LaGrange, Ga.) posted his first collegiate major decision for the St. Andrews Presbyterian College wrestling team, but host Spartanburg Methodist College prevailed 47-4 on Tuesday night.

Mathews built his 14-5 major decision in the 197-pound division with a combination of two takedowns, two near falls, and a reversal. Mathews’ victory over Nathan Pena provided the Knights with their only four points on the evening.

Freshman Eric Frick (Roaring Springs, Pa.) lost a close 1-0 decision to 165-lb Jonathan Jackson. The only other decision came in the lightweight ranks, where Michael Boring edged Knights sophomore Kyle Craver (Lexington, N.C.) 7-1.

Freshmen DJ Chverchko (Loretto, Pa./184-lbs) and Elliott Hogge (Yorktown, Va./149-lbs) also had take downs for St. Andrews.

The Pioneers built their point total with five pin falls, a technical fall, and a forfeit victory.

The Knights will once again hit the mat after the Christmas break, when they visit Newberry College on January 10 at 7:00 p.m.
