Pembroke wrestling sweeps St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, N.C.—In a tight battle in the heavyweight division, Eric Stancil (Raleigh, N.C.) had a takedown as time expired to defeat junior Charles Richardson (Virginia Beach, Va.) 6-4 and cap a 48-0 University of North Carolina at Pembroke wrestling sweep over host St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Thursday night in Harris Court.

The Braves improved to 3-0 in dual meets while the first year Knights program fell to 0-3.

Senior lightweight Adam Dedmon (Forest City, N.C.) put UNCP up 3-0 after the first match with a 12-5 decision over sophomore Kyle Craver (Lexington, N.C.).

Freshman Anthony Maerten (Fayetteville, N.C.) disposed of Knights freshman Brad McKee (Kings Mountain, N.C.) with a pin in the first period of the 133-pound division. The 1:08 fall extended Pembroke’s lead to 9-0. It was McKee’s first collegiate bout.

Sophomore Brandon Bradley (Richmond, Va.) won a 12-5 decision at 141-pounds over Knights freshman Bryan Seal (Orange County, Va.) while a SAPC forfeit at 149-lbs extended UNC-Pembroke’s advantage to 18-0.

Freshman Victor Hojilla (Newport, N.C.) supplied five more points for the Braves with a 17-1 technical fall at 157-pounds. Hojilla defeated freshman Elliot Hogge (Yorktown, Va.), who was taking his first attempt at the higher 157-lb weight class.

Sophomore J.J. Davis (Spartanburg, S.C.) improved to 11-0 on the season at 165-pounds for UNCP with a 3:24 pin against freshman Will Harcum (Williamsburg, Va.). Davis’ classmate Aaron Lynch (Goldsboro, N.C.) followed with the second straight pin for the Braves. Lynch downed freshman DJ Chverchko (Loretto, Pa.) in the third period at 5:54.

Junior Justin McEntire (Brevard, N.C.) posted the only major decision of the evening in the 184-lb division. McEntire overwhelmed freshman Alex Mathews (LaGrange, Ga.) with a score of 14-3. UNCP got six more points with a St. Andrews forfeit at 197-pounds.

Stancil’s 6-4 decision over Richardson in the finale concluded the 48-0 victory for the Braves.

St. Andrews travels to Jefferson City, Tenn., on Saturday for the Carson-Newman Duals. The Knights battle host Carson-Newman at 9:00 a.m. and then West Liberty State at 10:30 a.m.
